Jared Polis joined with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday as he addressed the National Governors Association in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Since the invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 22, 2022, by Russian troops, Polis and his administration have made an effort to support the country while condemning Vladimir Putin's action.  "Colorado and the United States are proud partners in President Zelenskyy's fight to protect Ukraine and Europe from dictator Vladimir Putin. Putin's brutal and globally destabilizing war poses a grave threat to Ukraine, the global order, and the U.S. and its allies," said Polis. Aurora may get tougher on penalties for motorists without license plates

By Tori Mason | CBS Colorado It's not uncommon to see vehicles with expired tags or no plates at all in Aurora. The Aurora Police Department has already increased enforcement. Now a city council member wants to get even tougher on drivers who think they're above the law in Colorado. "There isn't a time that I go out on the street where I don't see at least three or four cars with no plates," said Robbie De Jong, who runs an online community group for stolen vehicles. "If I have to do it, so does everybody else." By Spencer Wilson | CBS Colorado After a wildfire broke out at an unattended campsite just east of a popular Breckenridge neighborhood, local firefighters are praising a new tool for their quick reaction to get the flames put out before they became too much to handle.  Aside from growing in a place where wildfire mitigation had taken place only a year and a half ago, the Wellington wildfire was spotted by a Pano AI camera, financially supported by Xcel Energy. The camera sits on a cell tower with a 360-degree view and submits an alert to emergency crews if it notices smoke. Members-only auto race track on course for rural Adams County

It's the beginning of a members-only race track.    "It's a private racing facility," Nick Eagleson, Adams County senior strategic planner told CBS News Colorado.  "Adams County is growing -- obviously it is growing east. There's a lot of benefits because of the location and its proximity to DIA as well as downtown Denver," Eagleson said. Nine parcels of land purchased make up the 600-acre site. Ah, grasshopper. They are everywhere in Colorado this year.

By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado Coloradans across the Front Range, especially in Northern Colorado, have noticed significantly more grasshoppers this year. Researchers with Colorado State University confirm there has been a spike in grasshoppers across the state. "Colorado is seeing a very large number of grasshoppers, we have been getting reports from all around the state," said Lisa Mason, horticulture specialist and entomologist for CSU. Mason told CBS News Colorado's Dillon Thomas the grasshoppers we are seeing right now are the result of eggs buried in the dirt by grasshoppers in 2023 which were able to hatch as the result of a relatively warm and dry winter and spring. By Jasmine Arenas | CBS Colorado Police in Denver are warning windshield washers that they could be cited at Denver intersections.  This scenario has become so normal that drivers can actually count on a handful of people waiting for them at busy intersections. For the windshield washers, their ultimate goal is to make a buck or two. Groups of squeegee workers say Denver Police have stopped by a number of intersections and highways to hand out fliers letting them know that what they're doing is illegal - more specifically walking through intersections and asking for money. Moose on Northern Plains? Three have been spotted in Nunn

By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado Three moose have wandered away from the foothills along the Front Range and are now navigating their way through the plains of Northern Colorado. Two cows and one bull moose have been spotted recently making their way through the small town of Nunn, east of I-25.  According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the three moose have been spotted in the area in the last two days. It is believed they followed rivers and creeks east, ultimately bringing them into Weld County.  Viewers Aidan and Abi Holsten shared the video with CBS News Colorado's Dillon Thomas showing the moose trotting around through rural yards. It was hot in June, second-hottest June on record in fact

June 2024 will go down as the second-warmest June on record in Denver.    It was a hot month with 28 days featuring above average high temperatures, and only two days with highs below average. When you crunch the numbers, the typical high is 83.4 degrees. From plastic forks to water bottles to ice cream cups, in Breckenridge it is all banned

By Spencer Wilson | CBS Colorado Breckenridge's ordinance banning single-use plastics -- like plastic forks and plastic water bottles -- has entered its second phase as of July 1. A similar ban in Frisco took effect last year before Colorado's statewide ban. Businesses in town are expected to either stop selling plastic water bottles or find alternatives. They are also expected to find different containers for things like plastic ice cream cups or utensils. Jessie Burley, sustainability and parking manager for the town of Breckenridge, said there will still be a few things that need to be removed but are not yet.
