Yadira Caraveo in the battleground 8th Congressional District, raised more than $170,000 in the last three months of 2023, his campaign said Monday. The Fort Lupton Republican's campaign plans to report starting the year with just over $186,000 in the bank. His campaign said Evans, who entered the primary in September, tallied contributions from nearly 2,000 unique donors last year, for an average donation of just under $95. Caraveo, a Thornton pediatrician and former state lawmaker, is seeking a second term representing the state's newest congressional seat, which covers parts of Adams, Weld and Larimer counties north of the Denver metro ar...

Elisabeth Epps’ primary challenger outraises incumbent, secures endorsements from legislators

Meanwhile, Rep. Tim Hernandez trails his chief primary opponent, Cecelia Espenoza, in fundraising By Marianne Goodland | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS Rep. Elisabeth Epp's primary challenger has outraised the incumbent House legislator, securing key endorsements from colleagues and maximum contributions from several current Democratic legislators. Sean Camacho raked in the top dollars, pulling over $58,000 between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2023, the most recent campaign finance reporting period showed.  His campaign chest counted contributions from fellow Democratic lawmakers, and, more notably, from leadership funds, which are set up to raise money to help Democrats keep their legislative seats and try and win others. All told, 17 current state lawmakers — including 11 of E...

Colorado’s primary elections under legal challenge, new data show federal judges’ delays | COURT CRAWL

By Michael Karlik | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS Welcome to Court Crawl, Colorado Politics' roundup of news from the third branch of government. The Colorado Republican Party appeared in court last week seeking modifications to the state's system for primary elections, and new data from the federal judiciary show the extent of some judges' backlogs. A clash over unaffiliateds  •  In 2016, Colorado voters approved a ballot initiative to permit registered unaffiliated voters — the largest voting bloc — to participate in either the Democratic or Republican primaries. The GOP has mounted an official challenge to that law, Proposition 108, with a substantial portion of the party believing it is preferable for only Republicans to choose Republican nominees ...

Jury orders Trump to pay $83.3 million in damages to E. Jean Carroll

By Kaelan Deese, Washington Examiner Former President Donald Trump was ordered to pay $83.3 million to advice columnist E. Jean Carroll in a defamation lawsuit on Friday stemming from his denial of her claim that he raped her in the mid-1990s. A jury found Trump should pay $65 million in punitive damages to former Elle magazine columnist, as well as $18.3 million in compensatory damages. Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York in the mid-1990s. Former state lawmaker Janak Joshi jumps in GOP congressional primary in Colorado’s 8th

By Ernest Luning, Colorado Politics Former state Rep. Janak Joshi on Friday joined the field of Republicans hoping to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo in Colorado's 8th Congressional District. Vowing he'll be "big government's worst enemy," the former physician, who represented Colorado Springs districts for three terms last decade in the legislature, said his unabashedly conservative track record makes him the best candidate to win the battleground seat, which could decide which party controls the U.S. House of Representatives after this year's election. “I’m the only candidate in this race with a proven conservative record to show that actions speak louder than mere words," Joshi said in statement to Colorado Politics. "We already have too many say-anything pol...

How Colorado became the focal point of 14th Amendment efforts to disqualify Trump from the ballot

By Jenny Deam | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS The extraordinary Colorado election case now headed for the U.S. Supreme Court to decide if former President Donald Trump is disqualified from the ballot had its humble beginnings three years ago in the Maryland basement office of a self-proclaimed legal nerd. It was around New Year’s Day 2021. Constitutional scholar and University of Maryland law school professor Mark Graber was putting the finishing touches on a chapter delving into the then mostly forgotten Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Just the kind of thing Graber, a historian at heart, loved. The rarely used section had been crafted more than 150 years ago to disqualify former Confederate leaders from holding office because they had engaged in an insurrection. It read...

A bill to designate nuclear energy as clean energy dies in committee

By Marissa Ventrelli  | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS A Senate bill that would have defined nuclear energy as clean energy died along party lines in committee Thursday. Introduced by Sen. Larry Liston, R-Colorado Springs, SB24-039 would have included nuclear energy in the statutory definition of clean energy sources, thus rendering it eligible for clean energy project funding. During discussion, opponents said such a designation would have a negative impact on the environment, while proponents listed the benefits of using nuclear energy. After length discussion, the Senate Committee of Transportation and Energy voted 4-3 to kill the measure. “It is our responsibility to lay the groundwork for the development of reliable and renewable energy for future generations to ...
