Democratic Denver mayor to lead coalition of mayors asking for federal help for immigrants

By Brady Knox, Washington Examiner | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS Denver Mayor Mike Johnston is heading to Washington, D.C., as the head of a coalition of mayors asking for help with the migrant crisis. Johnston, a Democrat, will use the United States Mayors Conference to advocate federal assistance in dealing with the migrant crisis. Denver is one of several Democratic-controlled cities that have been the target of Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R-TX) migrant busing campaign, which has seen Texas ship thousands of immigrants to the sanctuary cities. “In D.C. this week for the @usmayors conference to work with fellow mayors, our federal delegation and the White House to advocate for federal action on the migrant crisis,” Johnston said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. Johnston has previously...

Colorado House GOP leader Mike Lynch, a congressional candidate, was arrested in 2022 on DUI, gun charges

By Ernest Luning | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS State House Minority Leader Mike Lynch, a Republican candidate in Colorado's open 4th Congressional District, was arrested in 2022 on suspicion of drunken driving and being in possession of a gun while intoxicated, law enforcement records show. The Wellington lawmaker is one of 11 Republicans running for the seat held by retiring U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, a Windsor Republican serving his fifth term. The crowded primary field also includes U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, who announced in late December that she will run this year in the heavily Republican 4th CD rather than seek reelection in the more competitive district she represents. Lynch, serving his second term, was elected to lead House Republicans about six weeks after the arrest, ...

Denver City Council approves $88.5 million purchase of former Denver Post building

By Noah Festenstein | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS The Denver City Council on Tuesday approved the $88.5 million purchase of the former Denver Post building in downtown. The building at 101 W. Colfax Avenue last sold for $93.4 million in 2006, according to real estate records. Officials said the purchase is necessary, as the city needs more courtroom spaces by 2023. The city, which began leasing space from the owner of the Denver Post back in 2016, currently occupies 50%of the 101 W. Colfax building. The city pays about $5 million annually. The council postponed Tuesday’s vote for the purchase two weeks ago, citing cost concerns and the need for more information. READ FULL ARTICLE ON COLORADOPOLITICS.COM

Denver council postpones vote to ban homeless camp sweeps during frigid weather

By Noah Festenstein | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS The Denver City Council on Tuesday delayed a vote to ban homeless encampment sweeps when the temperatures fall below freezing. The primary sponsor of the bill, at-large Councilmember Sarah Parady, made the motion to postpone the vote for two weeks. Legislative bodies typically delay votes to give sponsors more time to secure votes or consider changes. "The postponement is just due to background logistics and I’m confident it will pass in two weeks!" Parady said. READ FULL ARTICLE ON COLORADOPOLITICS.COM

Vivek Ramaswamy suspends his 2024 Republican presidential bid, endorses rival Donald Trump

By BILL BARROW - Associated Press | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy suspended his bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination on Monday and endorsed former President Donald Trump after finishing fourth in Iowa’s leadoff caucuses. Ramaswamy said he made the decision after determining there is no path forward for him in the race, "absent things that we don’t want to see happen in this country.” The 38-year-old political novice, who sought to replicate Trump’s rise as a bombastic, wealthy outsider, said he called the former president earlier Monday evening to congratulate him on his victory in Iowa. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came in second, with former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley just behind in third. READ F...

Denver City councilmembers ‘desperate’ amid homelessness, immigration crises

By Luige Del Puerto | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS Denver Mayor Mike Johnston plans to travel to Washington, D.C. this week — his second in as many months — to press White House and federal officials for a concrete solution to the illegal immigration crisis that's threatening to consume hundreds of millions of dollars of the city's budget.  Denver’s mayor earlier said if the current influx of immigrants persists, the city could be spending $180 million this year. In the past year, the city burned through $38 million to accommodate the more than 37,000 immigrants who illegally crossed America's southern border and arrived in Denver.  Worried about how to pay for the immigrants' food and shelter, Johnston asked the city's agency heads to evaluate their budgets and come u...

Trump notches commanding win in the Iowa caucuses, as DeSantis edges Haley for second place

By STEVE PEOPLES, THOMAS BEAUMONT and HANNAH FINGERHUT - Associated Press | SOURCE: Colorado Politics DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Former President Donald Trump scored a record-setting win in the Iowa caucuses on Monday with his rivals languishing far behind, a victory that sent a resounding message that the GOP's 2024 presidential nomination is his to lose. Trump was on track to set a record for a contested Iowa Republican caucus with a margin of victory exceeding the nearly 13 percentage points that Bob Dole won by in 1988. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis finished a distant second ahead of former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. In what was expected to be a low-turnout affair, caucus-goers endured life-threatening cold and dangerous driving conditions to meet in hundreds of schools, ...

Colorado Republican Party endorses Donald Trump ahead of state’s 2024 presidential primary

By Ernest Luning | SOURCE: Colorado Politics The Colorado Republican Party endorsed former President Donald Trump’s bid for another term late Sunday, nearly two months before state voters are set to cast ballots in Colorado's presidential primary. In an unprecedented decision, the state GOP's central committee voted to endorse Trump over objections from some Republicans that the move abandons the party's policy of staying neutral in primaries. The party approved the endorsement in an online meeting of its roughly 400-member governing committee, held on the eve of the GOP's first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses, where polling shows Trump holds a commanding lead. The endorsement resolution passed with 65% of the committee voting in favor, 34% voting against, and the remainder abstain...

Five takeaways from opening week of Colorado’s legislative session

SOURCE: Colorado Politics During last week's opening ceremonies, Gov. Jared Polis and Colorado's lawmakers sought to pick up where last year's regular and special session left off by immediately focusing on one of the state's most persistent problems — the lack of affordable housing units. Here are five takeaways: Housing, housing, housing  Polis set the tone of the first few days of session by bluntly telling lawmakers that Coloradans are desperate for affordable housing and they're impatient for concrete solutions. "There is a real sense of hopelessness and despair in our state around housing that’s on par, in many ways, with how people feel about the divisiveness of our national politics," the governor said in his State of the State address.  READ FULL ARTICL...
