In Aurora, Danielle Jurinsky doesn’t talk change—she works for it

By Shaina Cole | Contributing Writer, Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice Since taking office in 2021, Danielle Jurinsky has thrown herself into Aurora’s challenges. She’s backed measures to curb crime and pushed to ease the load on small businesses and residents when it comes to local taxes. But Jurinsky’s work hasn’t stopped at city hall — she’s known for showing up at neighborhood cleanups, community events, and talking face-to-face with the people she represents. One of her biggest moments came when she raised the alarm about a violent gang terrorizing residents at local apartment complexes— while others looked the other way. -https://www.danielleforaurora.com/about Taking the risk to tell the truth about Tren de Aragua She made national headlines when she publicly ...

Parents vs. unions: The battle over Mesa County’s schools

By Kent Zook | Guest Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice The same people and organizations trying to replace District 51 School board members, Andrea Haitz, Will Jones, and Angela Lema are the ones responsible for neglecting our schools in the first place. Previous board leadership allowed facilities to deteriorate to the point that repair costs became unfeasible. Union-backed leaders pushed for schools to remain closed longer during COVID-19 and for students to continue masking despite mounting evidence that masks did little to prevent transmission. On August 17, 2021, under the old union-backed board, a public meeting abruptly ended after just 30 minutes of comment, even though 45 minutes had been allotted. The board members, backed by the union, simply walked out with a police escort...

Colorado’s car theft crisis: How policy mistakes fueled years of record losses

By Mike O’Donnell | Guest Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice The FBI’s Crime Data Explorer website highlights that there were 95,564 fewer reported motor vehicle thefts across the United States in calendar year 2024 than there were in 2008, a decrease of around 10%. But not in Colorado where, due to policy choices by politicians and the court system, the number of motor vehicle thefts increased by 131%. The Colorado Crime Statistics website shows that the number of reported motor vehicle thefts in the state increased from 11,004 in 2008 to 25,424 in 2024. And 2024 was a much better year for Coloradans than in 2020 when 28,246 vehicles were stolen. It was also better than in 2021 when there were 37,249 thefts; 2022 saw a record 41,390 vehicles stolen (113 per day), and 2023 when t...

Johnstown Breeze publisher under fire for “Mexican whipping” email to Weld County GOP

By Rocky Mountain Voice Staff | Rocky Mountain Voice The publisher of the Johnstown Breeze signs her emails with a Dalai Lama quote: “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” But her recent message to the Weld County Republican Party was anything but kind.  At issue is Bangert’s response to an email that was sent with details to party members and media about the Weld County Hoedown on Oct. 6. Bangert simply replied:  “What time is the flag burning and the Mexican whipping?” Weld County GOP Chairman Hunter Rivera called Bangert’s reply “deplorable and unacceptable” after it surfaced in a Facebook exchange with her husband, Breeze co-owner Matt Lubich. The email in question had been sent to more than 3,000 recipients—a routine community announcemen...

The Broncos and the Good Attitude that Outlasts the Game

By Drake Hunter | Commentary, RMV NE CO Newsroom, Rocky Mountain Voice The Denver Broncos’ big win against the Giants this week wasn’t just a triumph on the scoreboard — it was a tribute to a man whose attitude changed the game long before kickoff. Demaryius Thomas, remembered this week across Broncos Country, embodied something far greater than athletic excellence. His positive attitude and resilience, even in the face of personal challenges, inspired his teammates and fans alike. This inspiration, in turn, contributed to the team's victory. He lived what we might call the good attitude of life — one shaped by virtue, perspective, and grace. The Power of Attitude Thomas often said, “I just thank God for another day.” Simple words, but they carried the weight of perspective. He kn...

Tina Peters’ attorney presses Governor Polis and Secretary Griswold to eliminate computer voting machines

By Jen Schumann | Rocky Mountain Voice Attorney John Case, who represents former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, has sent an open letter to Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and Secretary of State Jena Griswold urging the state to immediately discontinue electronic voting systems and return to in-person, hand-counted paper ballots. Case’s letter, dated October 21, outlines a series of concerns about the Dominion voting software used in 60 counties. It cites sworn testimony from two former Venezuelan election insiders who claim Dominion’s systems share code and design elements with Smartmatic software previously used in Venezuela—software the witnesses allege was developed to ensure predetermined outcomes. According to the letter, those sworn statements were part of federal court filings in...

Pueblo’s game changer: 2C asks who should run the city—a professional or a politician

By Jen Schumann | Rocky Mountain Voice Pueblo is about to decide–as Randy Thurston puts it—whether power belongs to a politician or a professional. On Unleashed with Heidi Ganahl: Pueblo pushback: the mayor, the vote & the battle for Colorado’s soul, Thurston, a former city councilman and broker called 2C “one of the most massive game changers” Pueblo has faced in decades. If approved, 2C would eliminate the strong-mayor system adopted seven years ago and return the city to a professional manager model—where council hires an administrator to run daily operations instead of leaving those duties to one elected office. “There are historic moments in every community, and this is one of the most massive game changers that’s on the table here,” Thurston said. “The question really is...

EVERY Day In America Is ‘No Kings Day’—READ the U.S. Constitution

By Russ Minary | Guest Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” Mark Twain may or may not have said it, but whoever did certainly had a valid point. Today in 2025, many people seem to know a lot that just ain’t so. Over the weekend, thousands of people gathered in cities across the U.S. for a series of “No Kings” rallies and protests. The NO KINGS website lists many partner organizations including marxists, socialists, communists, anti-Americans, Democrats, progressives, radical environmentalists, abortionists, anarchists and many others that oppose the lawful Constitutional authority and order of our Republics—some of whom advocate rebellion, insurrection, violence and the overthrow of...

Ready, Aim, Fire: How the Shoes of Peace Keep Us Steady During Chaos

By Pastor Drake Hunter | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, 'Your God reigns! ~ Isaiah 52:7 ~ Last week, Sherrie and I were traveling to Florida. Many know my wife has Stage 4 brain cancer, and because of that, she’s mostly immobilized. When we travel, she needs a wheelchair, and I do everything I can to make the process easier for her. On this trip, we had a long layover at the airport in Maryland. When it came time to board our connecting flight, the attendant announced over the speaker, “We’ll now begin boarding those needing assistance.” That should have been our cue to show care, patience, and offer help. Instead, i...

Two doors and an insurance policy: Inside the legal backstops in Tina Peters’ October 16 hearing

By Jen Schumann | Rocky Mountain Voice After more than four years of courtroom battles and appeals, former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters’ fight now hinges on a single federal question: whether Colorado courts violated her constitutional rights by denying her bond pending appeal.  The Oct. 16 motions hearing was part of a broader federal proceeding stemming from Peters’ Application for a Writ of Habeas Corpus filed in February. That petition asks the U.S. District Court to determine whether her ongoing detention violates the Constitution. It argues that the state’s denial of bail pending appeal punished Peters for her speech, violated her First and Fourteenth Amendments, and ignored the federal obligations that she says guided her actions as Mesa County Clerk under the Supremacy ...
