New law eases rules for immigrants to get driver’s licenses, IDs in Colorado

By Maddie Rhodes | Fox31 News DENVER (KDVR) — A new law goes into effect at the end of March that reduces the wait times and other requirements for immigrants to get United States driver’s licenses and identification cards in Colorado. Senate Bill 24-182, “Immigrant Identification Document Issuance,” made its way through the Senate in 2024 and was backed by democratic senators Julie Gonzalez, Jeff Bridges, Tim Hernández and Elizabeth Velasco. The bill, approved by Gov. Jared Polis in June 2024, will allow the “Colorado Road and Community Safety Act” to authorize driver’s licenses or identification cards to people who aren’t “lawfully present” in the country if they meet certain requirements. DOGE is terminating $9.4M in leases across Colorado

By Maddie Rhodes | Fox31 News Government agencies nationwide are experiencing spending cuts and layoffs with billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, and leases for property across Colorado are on the list. DOGE posted a “Wall of Receipts” on its website, listing contract, grant and lease cancellations. Over $9.4 million in leases are included, totaling 355,000 square feet. FOX31 matched the list to the U.S. General Services Administration’s inventory of federal government leases, which provided additional information, including addresses. By Carly Moore | Fox 31 News DENVER (KDVR) — A bill seeking to change the requirements for purchasing a semiautomatic gun in Colorado will be discussed in the House on Tuesday. In February, the bill passed the senate 19 to 15, but not without strong push back. Senate Bill 25-003, “Semiautomatic Firearms & Rapid-Fire Devices,” has been amended 15 times. This bill would ban the sale and manufacturing of many semiautomatic guns in Colorado. One of the important amendments would allow guns with a detachable magazine to be purchased only if buyers complete about 12 hours of training courses. New Westminster billboard asks for help solving 26-year-old cold case

By Jim Hooley | Fox 31 News A new billboard along Interstate 70 and Harlan Street is asking for the public’s help in solving a 26-year-old cold case. Westminster police said new investigative DNA technology has given detectives hope of possibly bringing the investigation to a close.   Paul Skiba, his 9-year-old daughter Sarah, and Paul’s business associate, Lorenzo Chivers, were killed in 1999. On Feb. 7 of that year, Skiba, Sarah and Chivers disappeared after returning to Skiba’s moving company, Tuff Movers, located off Raleigh Street in Westminster near 71st Avenue. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office released a five-minute video on X that included an introduction from Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly and a narrated version of the body camera footage and surveillance footage. There’s an ‘outbreak’ of sick racoons in Arapahoe County, officials say

By Maddie Rhodes | Fox 31 News Arapahoe County Animal Services is warning locals to take precautions after seeing an increased number of sick raccoons in the area. The Arapahoe County Government posted that animal services has seen an “outbreak” of sick raccoons suffering from canine distemper, a viral disease infecting raccoons, foxes, coyotes, skunks and unvaccinated dogs. It is spread when animals have direct contact with body fluids or droppings from an infected animal. The county said symptoms of the usually deadly disease can include discharge from the nose and eyes, a rough coat of hair, emaciated appearance and unusual behavior like disorientation or wandering aimlessly.
