Metro District board member recalled in special election amid complaints of ‘verbal abuse and physical intimidation’

By Heather Willard | KDVR-TV DENVER (KDVR) — According to the unofficial vote tally published by the Denver Office of the Clerk and Recorder, a reportedly contentious board member of the Ebert Metropolitan District Board of Directors has been recalled and replaced. Murray Hawthorne, treasurer and board member for the Ebert Metro District, was described in a recall petition as someone who “does not represent or respect Ebert residents.” The petition further claimed a pattern of verbal abuse and physical intimidation from Hawthorne to residents. Hawthorne protested the recall election on Nov. 29, 2023. Officers, staff walk out at prison in JeffCo in pursuit of higher wages

By Heather Willard | KDVR-TV DENVER (KDVR) — Around a dozen correctional officers at a federal prison in Colorado walked out Thursday over claims of low staffing and pay and held a picket to foster support. According to staff at the Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood, correctional officers say they are short-staffed and forced to work overtime hours. They also said non-officers will sometimes be put on duty as officers, which is dangerous for all involved. AFGE Local 709, which oversees the Council of Prison Locals #33, released 12 points to share the workers’ perspectives. Kill a police K-9, go to jail: Colorado bill would make harming, killing law enforcement animals a felony

By Heather Willard | KDVR-TV DENVER (KDVR) — A bill that would increase penalties for individuals who harm law enforcement animals passed through a Colorado House committee Tuesday, bringing it one step closer to becoming a new law. The proposed legislation is moving forward almost a year after the death of K-9 Graffit of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Graffit was killed chasing a man through a wooded area on Feb. 13, 2023. Police say he had a gun on the School of Mines campus in Golden before the chase. The bill would change the law on aggravated cruelty to animals to become a Class 4 felony.
