Douglas County nullifies SB 131, allowing those with concealed carry permit to do so in government buildings

By Heather Willard | Fox 31 KDVR.com The Douglas County board of commissioners voted Tuesday to opt out of a new state law prohibiting individuals from carrying firearms in sensitive places, such as government buildings, schools and polling locations. The law will go into effect on July 1 and has a provision allowing local governments to enact legislation permitting people to carry firearms in the areas described in the bill. “Douglas County’s opting out of the requirements of the onerous SB24-131 allows visitors to county facilities and properties the ability to protect themselves as they choose,” said Commissioner Lora Thomas, a Republican, in a county release. Officials concerned with public safety, human waste at Auraria protest camp

By Rogelio Mares | KDVR DENVER (KDVR) — Auraria Campus officials raised concerns Thursday about safety and sanitary conditions at the ongoing encampment protests there. There was no word Thursday on plans to clear the encampment, but options appear to be running thin. Campus officials say they are concerned about nonstudents and possible criminal activity, while students said they are not the ones causing the issues. Auraria Campus officials report hazards to public safety and cleanliness at the encampment, which has been a weeks-long protest against the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. “A lot of it has been our patrols and our folks who have been monitoring the quad,” said Devra Ashby, with Auraria Higher Education Center. Denver announces plan to invest over $500M to revitalize downtown

By Brooke Williams | KDVR DENVER (KDVR) — After teasing the announcement in an “ask me anything” session on Reddit, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said Thursday that the city plans to invest more than $500 million over the next decade to “restore downtown vibrancy and stimulate economic growth.” According to a release from the city, downtown Denver has been slower than other areas when it comes to recovering from the pandemic. The city said downtown has seen lower foot traffic, businesses closing and a lack of new housing development because hybrid and remote working options are becoming more popular. Teen ‘seriously injured’ falling into abandoned missile silo in Arapahoe County

By  Samantha Jarpe | Fox 31 Denver The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and several other agencies rescued several teens from an abandoned missile silo near Deer Trail Sunday morning. One of the teens was in critical condition after falling 30 feet. A rescue operation had been underway to save the teen. Just before 9 a.m., the teen was rescued and put into a helicopter that was on standby at the scene and airlifted away. Authorities told FOX31 that the teen, who is 18, was expected to survive. By Samantha Jarpe | FOX 31 Denver The Denver Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire that displaced a family Saturday afternoon. As of 2 p.m., the fire was completely out. The fire occurred in a northwest Denver neighborhood, near 39th Avenue and Clay Street. One firefighter was evaluated for smoke inhalation, but no civilians were injured. In Weld County, emu named ‘Buddy’ on the loose identified as an ostrich by passerby

By Heather Willard | KDVR-TV Sometimes, law enforcement is asked to respond to some uncommon calls. On Tuesday, for example, Weld County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Officers responded to a report of an “ostrich in the roadway.” The “ostrich” turned out to be an emu who was out wandering in the area of Weld County Road 76 and County Road 33. County animal control officers were able to capture and contain the large, flightless bird, and safely hold the emu in a nearby fenced residential yard — with permission from the owner. Hundreds of people who live near the airport are so fed up with noise from planes and other issues that they’re suing Jefferson County, which owns and operates the airport. The lawsuit represents more than 400 people who live in the Rock Creek neighborhood, which is in Superior and just northwest of the airport. In Denver, making $95,000 a year isn’t enough to break you out of the lower middle class, according to a new study – but it is close. GOBankingRates researched the 100 largest cities in the U.S. and found the median household incomes for those cities.
