Thousands Gather at Red Rocks for Nation’s Largest 9/11 Stair Climb

By Courtney Fromm | KDVR Fox 31 MORRISON, Colo. (KDVR) — Thousands gathered Thursday morning for the 17th annual 9/11 memorial stair climb at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison. Thursday marked 24 years since such a tragic day in the nation’s history and those who come out to the stair climb go up the stairs at the amphitheater to pay tribute to the firefighters and everyone killed back in 2001. The whole event starts in the upper south parking lot with a few words from organizers and a moment of silence right at 8:46 a.m., which marks the moment the first plane hit the first tower. “The 2025 Colorado 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way to honor and remember the 343 FDNY firefighters and almost 3,000 Americans who died on 9/11,” Ronda Scholting, with West Metro Fire said in a pr...

Student Shares Harrowing Story From Evergreen High Shooting

By Heather Willard | KDVR FOX 31 DENVER (KDVR) — Hundreds of students were impacted Wednesday when one of their classmates brought a gun to campus and shot two students and himself at Evergreen High School. Freshman Sam Fisher was in the school’s band room when the lockdown began, just days into his first year of high school. “So we all kind of hid in a corner,” Fisher told FOX31’s Courtney Fromm. “We heard like the first gunshot, we were one of the first rooms that they went to. So it was the first gunshot that went, and everybody kind of freaked out a bit, and then there was a second, and I sort of blanked out at that point, but I think I felt some kind of debris hit my forehead.” The suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the hospital hours after the shooting, acc...

Evergreen Community Mourns After Deadly High School Shooting

By Shaul Turner | KDVR Fox 31 EVERGREEN, Colo. (KDVR) — Residents in the small community of Evergreen remain in shock after a deadly shooting at Evergreen High School on Wednesday. Many gathered at familiar places along the town’s main street to show each other support. “Some people might say there’s not a safe place to live in America,” Kevin Shepard told FOX31. Shepard, a former Western Slope school teacher, tells FOX31 that students deserve a chance to learn in a safe environment. “You feel like living in a small mountain town outside of Denver, the city here that, like you kind of can avoid violence and things like that, but it’s really we have such a crisis of mental health among our young people,” Shepard said. Many are shocked by the realization that a school shoot...

City of Denver Promises Cleanup of Abandoned Home Tied to Crime

By Hanna Powers | KDVR Fox 31 DENVER (KDVR) — Less than 24 hours after FOX31 highlighted an alleged drug house in Denver’s Swansea neighborhood, city inspectors posted a 24-hour emergency abatement notice on the property. Neighbors had long complained about the vacant home on Fillmore Street, saying it had been used for drugs, stolen cars, and squatting. They told FOX31 the house was a magnet for crime, trash, and even rats. James Hicks, manager of Denver’s Neglected and Derelict Building Program, confirmed inspectors were already tracking the property and said it’s on the city’s radar. “Even though it may look like nothing is happening, we’re very busy, we’re very aware,” Hicks said. “Especially these properties that are very visible. I saw your story this morning and I immedi...

Safeway Shutters Multiple Colorado Locations Citing Poor Performance

By Parker Gordon | KDVR FOX 31 DENVER (KDVR) — Safeway has just announced the closure of 10 stores within Colorado, including some Denver Metro area locations. On Tuesday, a Safeway spokesperson told FOX31 that the 10 stores are expected to cease operations before or on Nov. 7, which comes after a “strategic consolidation” through merging the Intermountain and Denver division into a Mountain West Division. “We continuously evaluate the performance of our stores, and occasionally, after long and careful deliberation, it becomes necessary to make the difficult decision to close certain locations. We are working to place affected associates in nearby stores wherever possible,” said the Safeway spokesperson. The spokesperson also listed the 10 Colorado locations, which are as foll...

GOP Lawmaker Barb Kirkmeyer Enters Colorado Governor’s Race

By Gabrielle Franklin | KDVR FOX 31 DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado state Sen. Barbara “Barb” Kirkmeyer is officially launching her gubernatorial bid, hoping to get a seat that Republicans have not secured in almost 20 years. The 2026 race for Colorado’s governor is starting to take shape. Republican Barb Kirkmeyer is joining the list of serious contenders, like Democrats Attorney General Phil Weiser and U.S. Senator Michael Bennet. “It’s time that we have a governor who knows how to govern and lead this state and understand that our best days are ahead of us. I think I am that person. All you have to do is go back and look at my accomplishments and my record as a county commissioner, as a state senator. I’ve been able to reduce property taxes. I led my county to zero debt. And as a stat...

Federal Order On All-Gender Bathrooms Meets Pushback From DPS

By Heather Willard | KDVR Fox 31 DENVER (KDVR) — In late August, the U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights told Denver Public Schools that it violated Title IX protections when it created an all-gender bathroom. Now, the district is asking for a 90-day negotiation period to resolve the allegations. The results of the OCR’s investigation were received by the district on Aug. 28. On Aug. 21, the district announced it had converted a second bathroom to become all-gender. The day after receiving the results, Denver Public School officials issued a statement, pushing back against the Office of Civil Rights’ determination. “At Denver Public Schools, we take pride in leading for Equity at every level of the organization. To our LGBTQ+ students, families, and supporter...

Student Demand Surges But Trade Schools Struggle to Recruit Experienced Teachers

By Alliyah Sims | KDVR Fox 31 DENVER (KDVR) — As more students turn to skilled trades, a growing instructor shortage threatens to slow down programs designed to train Colorado’s future workforce. Inside Emily Griffith Technical College, the classrooms don’t look like lecture halls; they resemble job sites. You can find students suited up in safety gear learning the skills that help keep Colorado running. “The demand is very, very high. Most of our trades programmings actually have a wait list,” said Gideon Geisel, dean of the college. Behind the scenes of those full classrooms comes a hidden problem. They are getting harder to staff, leaving some instructor positions unfilled for months. “Since I’ve been here, really all of the programs, you know, at one time or another h...

State Report Highlights Progress and Ongoing Challenges in Colorado Schools

By KDVR Staff | KDVR Fox 31 DENVER (KDVR) — A total of 55% of Colorado school districts received an accredited or higher rating for the 2025-2026 school year in the preliminary school and district accountability frameworks released Wednesday by the Colorado Department of Education. The frameworks are used to accredit school districts and assign school ratings by measures such as graduation rates, academic achievement and growth, according to the CDE, which said this year’s preliminary frameworks were based on data from 2024-2025. “The steady progress in the school and district frameworks is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students, staff, and communities over the past few years,” said Colorado Education Commissioner Susan Córdova, in a statement. The 55% acc...

Victims Urge Accountability as Weld County Ex-Coach Awaits Sentencing in Child Sex Abuse Case

By Hanna Powers | KDVR Fox 31 WELD COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — A former basketball coach in Weld County has been convicted of sexually abusing multiple players and is now awaiting sentencing. George “JR” Sagner was found guilty on multiple felony counts, including sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust. Prosecutors said Sagner used his role as a coach to groom and abuse players for years. He is scheduled to be sentenced in January and faces a minimum of 12 years and up to more than 100 years in prison. The case began with a Safe2Tell tip in 2022, but court records show allegations stretching back to 2012. During a trial that wrapped up last week, jurors heard weeks of testimony about a pattern of abuse that took place during practices, in cars and at Sagner’s home. ...
