U.S. gets rare earths, China gets 55% tariffs under Trump trade pact

By Brett Samuels | The Hill President Trump said Wednesday his administration reached a tentative agreement on a trade truce with China following talks between the two sides in London. As part of the agreement, which Trump said was pending his approval and the approval of Chinese President Xi Jinping, China will supply “full magnets, and any necessary rare earths,” Trump said on Truth Social. Trump indicated the U.S. would impose 55 percent tariffs on Chinese goods, while China would impose a 10 percent tariff on U.S. products. “Likewise, we will provide to China what was agreed to, including Chinese students using our colleges and universities (which has always been good with me!),” Trump posted, describing the relationship between the two sides a...

Trump says he’ll strip Harvard of tax-exempt status

By Julia Mueller | The Hill President Trump on Friday announced plans to strip Harvard University of its tax-exempt status, escalating his feud with the Ivy League school.  “We are going to be taking away Harvard’s Tax Exempt Status. It’s what they deserve!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The declaration comes after his administration reportedly asked the IRS to revoke Harvard’s status last month, after Trump had suggested the idea on social media. READ THE FULL STORY AT THE HILL

DOGE refers dozens of voter fraud cases to DOJ

By Julia Shapero and Alex Gangitano | The Hill Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has referred dozens of alleged cases of voter fraud to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for prosecution, one of his staff said Wednesday.  Antonio Gracias, a long time Musk ally who is working for DOGE in the Social Security Administration, said the cost-cutting panel had identified 57 resident aliens who had registered to vote.  “We’ve referred many prosecutions to the DOJ, and they’re working on them now,” he said at a briefing with Musk and a small group of reporters, READ THE FULL STORY AT THE HILL

Immigration judge allows Mahmoud Khalil deportation effort to proceed

By  Lexi Lonas Cochran | The Hill A judge in former Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil’s case ruled against him Friday, finding he is eligible for deportation while giving his legal team a little less than two weeks to respond. Jamee Comans, an immigration judge in Louisiana, found the government’s case is “facially reasonable.” She gave his team until April 23 to file its response. The government had “established by clear and convincing evidence that he is removable,” Comans said, The Associated Press reported. READ THE FULL STORY AT THE HILL

Trump: ‘Major’ pharmaceutical tariffs coming soon

By  Ashleigh Fields | The Hill President Trump said Tuesday his administration soon would announce “major” tariffs on pharmaceuticals, adding to the tariffs he has already imposed on most goods entering the United States from abroad. “We’re going to be announcing very shortly a major tariff on pharmaceuticals,” Trump said during a speech at the National Republican Congressional Committee. “And when they hear that, they will leave China. They will leave other places because they have to sell — most of their product is sold here, and they’re going to be opening up their plants all over the place in our country,” he added.  READ THE FULL STORY AT THE HILL

Divided Supreme Court sides with Trump to block teacher grants

By  Zach Schonfeld | The Hill A divided Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration by allowing officials to block $65 million in teacher development grants frozen over concerns they were promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices.  The 5-4 emergency ruling, for now, lifts a lower order that forced the Education Department to resume the grants in eight Democratic-led states that are suing. Five of the court’s six conservatives sided with the administration to grant the request. Chief Justice John Roberts and the court’s three liberal justices dissented.  READ THE FULL STORY AT THE HILL

Trump fires NSA director and deputy after Loomer meeting

By Rebecca Beitsch and Filip Timotija  | The Hill The Trump administration has fired the director of the National Security Agency as well as his deputy, prompting outrage from congressional Democrats. Director Gen. Timothy Haugh was ousted late Thursday along with his civilian deputy Wendy Noble, a decision that followed the firing of several other top NSA staffers earlier that day. Haugh, who also leads the U.S. Cyber Command, has more than 30 years experience in the U.S. Air Force and led numerous cyber operations to counter efforts from Russia and other U.S. adversaries.  READ THE FULL STORY AT THE HILL

Gelman: Judges, stay in your lane and stay out of politics

By David Gelman | The Hill , Commentary One of the best pieces of advice you can give anyone starting a venture is this: Be bold, but stay in your lane. In other words, know your role, understand what you don’t know and avoid straying into areas beyond your expertise. That’s advice certain federal district court judges would do well to heed — for the good of our republic and the health of the judiciary itself.  As the Trump administration moves forward with efforts to remove illegal immigrants, including violent Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang members, the role of federal judges — specifically activist liberal district court judges — has come under serious scrutiny. While Democrats continue to distract their base with false narratives and manufactured crises, they conveniently igno...

Postal Service signs cost-cutting deal with DOGE

By  Lauren Irwin | The Hill The United States Postal Service said it has signed a deal with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to cut costs at the agency. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy told congressional leaders in a letter that he had signed an agreement with Elon Musk’s DOGE to cut jobs and spending at the agency that has long lost money. DeJoy said the organization has spent the past four years transforming from a “battered government bureaucracy” that experienced financial losses into a higher quality service, but it is still not achieving its goals. Federal judge rules Trump must reinstate many fired federal employees

By Zach Schonfeld  | The Hill A federal judge ruled Thursday that the Trump administration must reinstate probationary government employees fired unlawfully at several agencies, lambasting the Justice Department at a hearing for a “sham” gambit that enabled a key official to avoid testifying in the case.  U.S. District Judge William Alsup’s ruling broadens his previous order to now require the government to reinstate probationary employees fired on Feb. 13 and 14 at the Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Defense, Energy, Interior and Treasury departments.  The case is one of multiple pending lawsuits challenging the mass terminations of probationary workers, who are usually in their first or second year in a role. The firings are just one dimension of a broader effort by the new...
