This Colorado rancher sees a world where conservation can turn a profit

By Tracy Ross | Colorado Sun Their hoofprints fan out in four directions but the elk that overwinter here have scattered. The snow is changing to ice and a brisk wind scours the ground. Maybe the gusts chased them off. Or a memory, stored deep in their DNA, of an elk caught in a barbed wire fence with a coyote eating it. That’s a slow, horrifying death, even though it’s just nature at work. Except it isn’t, says Dave Gottenborg, because of the fence.  Dave and his wife, Jean, bought the 3,000-acre Eagle Rock Ranch in Park County in 2012. But when they introduce themselves, they say they “manage” it.  That’s because Dave doesn’t like the idea of “owning” ground that’s been around millions of years longer than he has. In fact, he just worked with Colorado State University’...

Demand for Colorado’s Ag in the Classroom creates increased funding need

By Rachel Gabel | The Fence Post The Colorado Agriculture in the Classroom program has experienced tremendous growth in demand from teachers wanting to include agriculture in their curriculum. So much so, there are currently 1,100 classrooms — over 23,000 students — signed up, creating the need for an additional $20,000 in funding to avoid turning away students. Sisters Rachel (Linke) Allnut and McCall (Linke) Knecht worked together with their cousin, Sierra Linke, to create Seed, Sprout, Spice for the Colorado Agriculture in the Classroom project. All three young women are ranch raised and graduated from Middle Park High School. Allnut, a kindergarten teacher used her teaching expertise in foundational reading skills and her love of agriculture to write the text and, paired with Lin...

Fankhauser remembered as fierce advocate for beef industry

Terry Fankhauser, among the state’s greatest advocates for the cattle industry, is being remembered by cattle raisers and dignitaries in Colorado for his unwavering devotion. For more than two decades, he served as the executive vice president of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, retiring in 2022 to return to the family’s farm in Kansas. Polis plans to fool ranchers again with radical appointees to Parks and Wildlife

SOURCE: COLORADO PEAK POLITICS Gov. Polis’s cronies at Parks and Wildlife have apologized for being so secretive and deceitful with ranchers and locals about releasing dangerous wolves into their backyard and promises to be more cooperative and transparent in the future. We suspect it’s a trap. And so it is, confirms Rachel Gabel, assistant editor of The Fence Post Magazine, and a member of one of the state’s 12,000 cattle-raising families. Writing in Colorado Politics, Gabel reveals we’re just all being lulled into complacency long enough for Polis to screw us yet again when it comes to his new appointments to lead the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission (CPW). Apologies and assurances mean nothing so long as no one is willing to stand against Gov. Jared Polis’s ex...

Duvall to Farm Bureau members: Lobby for farm bill in 2024

By Hagstrom Report  | SOURCE: THE FENCE POST SALT LAKE CITY — American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall on Sunday urged members at the group’s annual convention here to lobby hard for Congress to pass a farm bill in 2024.“Thankfully, we achieved a farm bill extension,” Duvall said. “But, we need to get even louder. Now, I know we need to get through the budget process, but we also need to tell Congress it’s urgent to pass a new, modernized farm bill.”Duvall said members could stop by the Farm Bureau booth on the convention trade show floor and pick up a postcard and scan a code to call for action. This is just the first step in our 2024 grassroots advocacy efforts on farm bill,” Duvall said. “I’m asking you to send a resounding message to Congress to deliver a new farm b...

GAO: USDA needs to improve tracking of foreign farmland ownership

Hagstrom Report  | SOURCE: THE FENCE POST The Agriculture Department needs to collect, track, and better share data on foreign farmland ownership, but needs more money from Congress to do that, the Government Accountability Office said in a report released Thursday. GAO complained that USDA annually compiles its data from paper forms filed with headquarters or county offices, but Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has said that to make the system more accurate counties across the country would need to develop detailed systems to report to USDA. WEF releases report on financing sustainable agriculture

Hagstrom Report  | SOURCE: THE FENCE POST The World Economic Forum, which is meeting in Davos, Switzerland, this week, has released a report proposing a model for achieving sustainable agriculture worldwide. The report says, “To support the adoption of practices and sustain their implementation, a key source of financing should come from the monetization of the full value of all ecosystem services delivered by regenerative practices, including improved resilience and environmental outcomes like healthier soils, carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions avoidance, reduced freshwater use and pollution, and enhanced biodiversity.” “In exchange for ecosystem services, all the actors that benefit from regenerative agriculture, including value chain participants (across crop rot...
