Safeway Shutters Multiple Colorado Locations Citing Poor Performance

By Parker Gordon | KDVR FOX 31 DENVER (KDVR) — Safeway has just announced the closure of 10 stores within Colorado, including some Denver Metro area locations. On Tuesday, a Safeway spokesperson told FOX31 that the 10 stores are expected to cease operations before or on Nov. 7, which comes after a “strategic consolidation” through merging the Intermountain and Denver division into a Mountain West Division. “We continuously evaluate the performance of our stores, and occasionally, after long and careful deliberation, it becomes necessary to make the difficult decision to close certain locations. Albertsons’ new CEO is Susan Morris, who began her grocer career in Colorado

By Bernadette Berdychowski | The Denver Gazette Albertsons, the parent company of Safeway, will soon have a new CEO who's grocery career began in Denver.  The company's Chief Operating Officer Susan Morris will succeed Albertsons' current CEO Vivek Sankaran, the grocer announced Monday.  Sankaran plans to retire and Morris will take over May 1, Albertsons said in a news release. Supermarket super merger that would have impacted 105 grocery stores in Colorado collapses

By Tamara Chuang | The Colorado Sun A day after two judges in two lawsuits ruled against the proposed $24.6 billion supermarket merger, Albertsons Companies said Wednesday it would end its merger agreement with Kroger. “Given the recent federal and state court decisions to block our proposed merger with Kroger, we have made the difficult decision to terminate the merger agreement. We are deeply disappointed in the courts’ decisions,” Albertsons CEO Vivek Sankaran said. Following a lawsuit initiated by Attorney General Phil Weiser in February 2024, the state's grocery market's future hangs on Judge Luxen's upcoming decision.  Prior to trial, Weiser asserted, "In all events, the Kroger/Albertsons merger is bad for consumers, workers, farmers and communities." Kroger defended it as a way to lower prices, protect jobs and preserve competition. Attorney General Phil Weiser says the merger would "eliminate" competition between the two grocery giants." Kroger trial begins Tuesday (Monday is a state holiday), last week’s testimony gave onlookers a peek behind the corporate grocery curtain in Colorado. If the merger moves forward, Albertsons would no longer exist in Colorado, as it hands most of its local stores, which include mostly Safeways, to a little-known grocer and food distributor called C&S Wholesale Grocers in New Hampshire. Lawyers with the state Attorney General’s Office questioned whether the small company with a spotty history managing acquisitions can handle the $2.9 billion divestiture.
