Farmers Ranchers And Fuel Costs Drive Debate In Colorado Congressional Race

By David O. Williams | Vail Daily Republican Ron Hanks, a former state lawmaker and U.S. Air Force intelligence officer, told the Vail Daily in a recent email interview that this year’s race for the 3rd Congressional District seat that includes part of Eagle County is all about accountability — a quality he says incumbent Republican Jeff Hurd severely lacks. “Hurd has not been responsive to the district, has taken unpopular positions, and has not stood up to take accountability for his actions,” said Hanks, who successfully landed on the June 30 primary ballot by virtue of a voice vote at the GOP Assembly in Pueblo last month. Hanks, who unsuccessfully challenged Hurd in the 2024 primary, got the required 30% or more of the delegates at the assembly, whi...

Trump re-endorses Hurd in CD3: Says Scheppelman will exit race

By Jen Schumann | Rocky Mountain Voice Editor’s note: This story has been updated with additional reporting, including comments from Colorado Republican Party Secretary Russ Andrews and a statement from Hope Scheppelman confirming she has suspended her campaign. President Donald Trump on Friday morning reversed course in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, re-endorsing Rep. Jeff Hurd and announcing that former challenger Hope Scheppelman would step out of the race to join his administration—a move she later confirmed in a campaign statement. In a Truth Social post, Trump said Scheppelman and her husband Steven—both Navy veterans—will leave the campaign trail “to join my Administration, in a capacity to be determined,” calling them “wonderful and patriotic” supporters of the...

After Trump pulls endorsement, CD3 Republicans weigh loyalty and constitutional independence

By Jen Schumann | Rocky Mountain Voice President Donald Trump’s decision to revoke his endorsement of Rep. Jeff Hurd and instead back primary challenger Hope Scheppelman reshaped the Republican race in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District. It also sharpened a debate inside the party: does representation mean standing firm on constitutional ground—even when that conflicts with the president—or aligning closely with the America First agenda? From Durango to Grand Junction, Republicans are trying to sort out what Trump’s move means—not just for June, but for November. A question of representation Delta County resident Shirley Bauer said Trump’s announcement hit her hard. “When I heard President Trump pulled his endorsement of Rep. Jeff Hurd, it honestly thr...

With win over Frisch, Jeff Hurd has held Colorado’s 3rd District for Republicans

By Lindy Browning | Contributor, Rocky Mountain Voice Jeff Hurd's telephone rang at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, a little more than 24 hours after polls closed on Election Day. On the other end of the phone was his opponent, Democrat Adam Frisch. Hurd had pulled out a close race into a 12,413-vote lead with less than 12% of ballots remaining to be counted. “A few moments ago, I called to offer my congratulations to Jeff Hurd for being the next representative for Colorado’s 3rd [U.S. House] District," Frisch wrote in a statement. "Elections are about showing up, and I traveled more than 75,000 miles this campaign, authentically connecting with people from Dinosaur to Durango, Manzanola to Mancos and everywhere in between." The campaign was about them, he said, expressing apprec...

University of Colorado regent race in 3rd District: A contest of visions, with Ray Scott taking center stage

By Heidi Ganahl | Rocky Mountain Voice As Colorado’s 3rd District prepares for a crucial vote for a new University of Colorado regent, the race between former State Sen. Ray Scott and minister/educator Robert Logan highlights competing visions for the future of the University of Colorado system. The election, which comes at a time when higher education faces both budgetary challenges and calls for innovation, presents voters with a choice between two experienced leaders. However, Scott’s campaign is gaining momentum because of his unique blend of legislative expertise and commitment to financial oversight. Logan, who moved back to Durango after completing his seminary training, began an eight-year stint as a local minister before getting his teaching degree from Fort Lewis College...

Final take in 3rd District: One candidate has misled with deception, half-truths and lies; we support vote for Hurd

By Editorial Board | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice Adam Frisch and the Democrats are at it again. In Colorado Congressional District 3, once again the Frisch campaign, in cahoots with the Colorado Democrats, is spending money and sending flyers to voters in support of a third-party candidate who can’t win. This time they are promoting Libertarian James Wiley, who is running in an attempt to suck votes away from Republican Jeff Hurd. The flyers promote Wiley as the only strong Trump supporter in the race, and mock Hurd’s long career as an attorney. They neglect to say that his work as an attorney was solely focused on fighting back against federal bureaucrats' overreaching regulations that were hurting local rural schools, farmers and ranchers,  and businesses in addi...

FEC filings contradict Democrat Frisch’s claims that he doesn’t take corporate PAC money

By Lindy Browning | Contributor, Rocky Mountain Voice Adam Frisch, the Democratic nominee for Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, has told his supporters in person, in debates, on social media and on national television, that he does not take corporate or PAC money.  The claims just don’t track with his own campaign filings to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Neither does the fact that he has more than $13 million dollars in his campaign account. According to FEC records, Frisch has received 528 corporate donations through political-action committees. [See file at bottom of story] Frisch’s PAC donors include ACTBLUE, BLUEHEN, Progressive Turnout Project, Democrats Reshaping America PAC, Progressive Choices PAC, Jeffries For Congress, and Beyond Thoughts And Prayer...

Adam Frisch, Jeff Hurd meet for likely their final 3rd District debate in Pueblo

By Lindy Browning | Contributor, Rocky Mountain Voice The last meeting between Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District candidates, Democrat Adam Frisch and Republican candidate Jeff Hurd, took place Monday, Sept. 30, at the Hoag Theater in Pueblo. From the beginning of the debate it was clear that moderator Earnest Luning was going to ask the candidates some difficult questions and he wanted specific answers. At some points during the debate, he asked follow up questions to get more specific answers for the public. Luning, representing Colorado Politics, set the tone of the debate by asking both candidates how they were going to work with U.S. Rep. Lauren Bobert, who has represented the 3rd District and is now running in the 4th District in Northern Colorado and on the Eastern Plain...

Sherri Wright’s journey from cultivating fields to children lends to candidacy for state board of education

By Jen Schumann | Contributor, Rocky Mountain Voice Sherri Wright is as rooted in Colorado soil as the hay she grows on her 300-acre farm. Instead of her fields, she's been cultivating her 3rd District campaign for a seat on Colorado's State Board of Education. She's spent the last six weeks crisscrossing the district, racking up more than 5,000 miles on her truck. From the Four Corners to the Wyoming state line, Wright is dedicated to meeting with voters and sharing her vision for the future of Colorado’s schools. "Today, I’m up here instead of working my fields,” Wright said during a recent candidate forum in Delta County. "But the situation in our schools requires our attention. So, all I need from you is a heads up and I will show up for our families." With more than 40 ...

By Jesse Paul | Colorado Sun Democrat Adam Frisch, a former Aspen city councilman, and Republican Jeff Hurd, a Grand Junction Republican, are running against each other to represent Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District in Washington, D.C. The GOP-leaning district spans Colorado’s Western Slope and stretches into Pueblo and southeastern Colorado. U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, a Republican, currently represents the district, but moved to Windsor on the other side of the state and is running this year to represent the 4th Congressional District.
