Cherry Creek Schools Target Of New Federal Civil Rights Investigation

By Nicholas Fogleman | The Denver Gazette The U.S. Department of Education opened an investigation into Cherry Creek School District on Monday over allegations of racial discrimination. The department said its Office for Civil Rights is reviewing claims that the district violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by sponsoring “a wide range of racially-discriminatory programming.” The complaints alleged the district discriminated on the basis of race in student clubs, academic support programs, teacher training and a parent committee, the department said in a news release. GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. — Cherry Creek Schools Superintendent Chris Smith announced he would resign and retire on Wednesday, effective Jan. 30. A press release from the district states that Smith submitted a letter of resignation to the district’s board of directors, which was accepted during a meeting in executive session on Tuesday. Those not steeped in the priorities of the school board and Superintendent Chris Smith might think it wise to fixate on “disproportionality” as Dr. Poole does; but that fixation does not seem to be improving proficiency in reading or math, where half the district’s students do not test at grade level. Or much else.
