Walmart Targets Lower Prices After Receiving Nearly $3 Billion in Tariff Refunds

By Bradford Betz | FOX Business Walmart plans part of nearly $3 billion in tariff refunds to support its pricing strategy as the retailer posted higher sales and raised its annual outlook. Walmart has received nearly $3 billion in tariff refunds and says it will use some of the benefit to help keep prices low for shoppers, while the windfall also gave quarterly profit growth a significant boost. The company said it "prioritized investment in price" after receiving refunds tied to tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA. The refunds came as Walmart continued leaning into its value proposition. The retailer pointed to more than 11,000 price rollbacks across its U.S. stores during the quarter. "We’re i...

Prescription Drug Prices Post Sharpest Decline in More Than 60 Years

By Steve Thompson, Federica Cocco and Christopher Rowland | The Washington Post While overall medical costs continued to rise, prescription drug prices fell by 3.1 percent in the year ending in July, the steepest annual decline since 1963. Prescription drug prices recorded the biggest year-over-year drop in more than 60 years in July, a startling reduction experts chalked up to an array of factors, including more generics and discount GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. While overall costs for medical services continued to rise, prices for medicinal drugs fell 2.7 percent over the 12 months ending in July, the largest annual drop on record, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Wednesday. Prescription drugs, part of the medicinal drug category, fell by 3.1 perce...

Government intervention comes at a price

By Cory Gaines | Commentary, Colorado Accountability Project I came across the chart mentioned in the first link below during my wanderings about the internet. The link is to a blog post put out by HumanProgress.org, an offshoot of the Cato Institute a Libertarian think tank.I want to call your attention mainly to the graph embedded in the blog post. This is attached as screenshot 1. To help you orient yourself, this is a graph of the rise (or fall) in prices for a variety of goods and services in a time series from the year 2000 on. The scale is given as a percent increase (positive numbers), or decrease (negative numbers). It makes sense that prices change over time (how many of us had grandparents who quoted the price of a chocolate bar, how many of us will ...

JBS Labor Dispute in Greeley Could Complicate Beef Markets Beyond Colorado

By Jessica Porter | Denver7 The plant which processes up to 6,000 heads of cattle per day will impact the beef supply chain. GREELEY, Colo. — The impact of the JBS meatpacking plant strike on consumer beef prices is imperceptible in the short term, but the long-term impact is more complicated. About 3,800 workers at JBS Beef in Greeley walked off the job Monday as the union claimed the company retaliated against workers and committed unfair labor practices. The beef production facility processes between 5,000 and 6,000 head of cattle per day. “In the short term, the impact of the consumer level is probably pretty small, negligible, maybe not even present whatsoever, but if this continues, supply and demand will play out, and it's almost unavoi...

Safeway Shutters Multiple Colorado Locations Citing Poor Performance

By Parker Gordon | KDVR FOX 31 DENVER (KDVR) — Safeway has just announced the closure of 10 stores within Colorado, including some Denver Metro area locations. On Tuesday, a Safeway spokesperson told FOX31 that the 10 stores are expected to cease operations before or on Nov. 7, which comes after a “strategic consolidation” through merging the Intermountain and Denver division into a Mountain West Division. “We continuously evaluate the performance of our stores, and occasionally, after long and careful deliberation, it becomes necessary to make the difficult decision to close certain locations. We are working to place affected associates in nearby stores wherever possible,” said the Safeway spokesperson. The spokesperson also listed the 10 Colorado locations, which are as foll...

Inflation relief hands Trump a talking point on tariffs and the economy

By Randy DeSoto | The Western Journal President Donald Trump took a shot at Goldman Sachs’ CEO and its economists Tuesday while touting July’s inflation number, which came in cooler than expected. Goldman Sachs was among the many investment firms that predicted in April that Trump’s tariff policy would be inflationary, tank the stock market, and likely cause a recession. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the consumer price index rose 2.7 percent in July compared to the same month last year and rose 0.2 percent from June. That compares to a 2.8 percent increase predicted by Wall Street, according to CNBC. Trump responded to the report, posting on Truth Social, “Trillions of Dollars are being taken in on Tariffs, which has been incredib...
