Lone Tree police investigating increase in crash-and-grab home burglaries

By Rachel Saurer | Fox 31 News Over the past several weeks, the Lone Tree Police Department has seen an increase in home burglaries. In each case, suspects have gained access to the houses by breaking large windows or sliding glass doors on the rear of the house before leaving with cash, high-dollar purses, jewelry and other items. The houses generally back up to commercial property, open space, or a golf course, and as of yet, no one has been home at the time, which police said is the one positive. “That’s the bigger fear of the whole thing right, if that ever happened you know what’s the outcome of that going to be?” Lone Tree Police Chief Kirk Wilson said. PTS is a program for people who have been arrested to receive pretrial services in the jail, in addition to services while they are incarcerated. A pretrial assessment is completed for anyone who is booked in the Mesa County jail. Suspects in the case have been dubbed the 'Panda Bandits,' thanks to one person donning a panda costume while committing alleged crimes. According to authorities, suspects are alleged to have used rocks to smash a door or window for entry at the gas station located at 1603 Coalton Road, with two burglarizations occurring in the early morning hours of November 2 and a third occurring on November 10.
