The 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates that 28.2 million Americans have a “drug use disorder” and the National Council on Problem Gambling reports that approximately 2.5 million Americans have “severe problems” gambling and an additional 5 to 8 million have mild or moderate issues. The dangers of addictions to drugs and/or gambling are well known, highly publicized, and well studied, but the dangers of being addicted to making political donations aren’t. At least until now. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission, a four-member federal panel, will review a petition started by watchdog group America First Legal to add the requirement on the federal voter registration form. Now, 19 Democrat attorneys general—led by Rob Bonta of California—oppose such a rule, and 14 Republican attorneys general—led by Ken Paxton of Texas—support it. America First Legal said about 353,000 public comments were officially registered with the government on the issue, with the overwhelming majority in favor of the requirement. Jared Polis and Secretary of State Jena Griswold urging the state to immediately discontinue electronic voting systems and return to in-person, hand-counted paper ballots. Case’s letter, dated October 21, outlines a series of concerns about the Dominion voting software used in 60 counties. It cites sworn testimony from two former Venezuelan election insiders who claim Dominion’s systems share code and design elements with Smartmatic software previously used in Venezuela—software the witnesses allege was developed to ensure predetermined outcomes. If you break one of our state regulatory agencies’ copious rules, the process for our state’s administrative hearings bears little resemblance to a real trial.
