Costello: The unintended consequences of Proposition 127

By Mike Costello | Commentary, Westword Coloradans, I’m writing to you from California, where mountain lion hunting is illegal because of ballot-box biology. The idea of saving mountain lions and bobcats feels noble. They are magnificent critters, and supremely effective at making a living on the landscape (killing prey). We all love wild landscapes filled with diverse wildlife, including elusive and sometimes scary apex predators. While revered and respected for millennia, it is also true that humans have hunted, harvested and managed these animals as part of our own participation in the natural world. I call upon you: Do NOT abandon what works for wildlife in your great state. Ecosystems are incredibly complex, while Proposition 127 is a blunt-force solution for a problem that does...

13 candidates running for Colorado legislative seats this year don’t have a major-party opponent

By Jesse Paul | The Colorado Sun Thirteen candidates vying for state legislative seats this year are running without a major-party opponent, according to a Colorado Sun analysis of the 2024 ballot. There are 10 candidates — seven Democrats and three Republicans — running unopposed in state House districts, and three Democrats running opposed in state Senate districts. The Sun defines a candidate as running unopposed if they don’t have any general election opponent or if their only opponent is a third-party candidate, since it is exceedingly rare in Colorado for such candidates to mount a competitive state legislative campaign. The 13 races will determine the makeup of 13% of the legislature.  READ THE FULL STORY AT THE COLORADO SUN

Manchin endorses Hogan in Maryland Senate race, rebuffing former party

By Ross O'Keefe | Washington Examiner Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV) is endorsing former Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan in the state’s U.S. Senate race. The move is a sign Manchin is further distancing himself from the Democratic Party after changing his party affiliation to independent. His endorsement, which was made to DC News Now, is widely considered a snub to Democratic nominee Angela Alsobrooks. “Forget about being a Democrat or Republican,” Manchin said. “Larry Hogan is just the right person with the right attitude for the job. He’s not afraid to speak against your party, and he won’t be controlled by any party or any type of ideology.” READ THE FULL STORY AT THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER

Biden-Harris national security spokesman says no need to respond to vets on Afghanistan withdrawal debacle

By Jarrett Stepman  | Daily Signal White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby wrote Wednesday that there is “no use responding” to a “handful of vets” involved in the Afghanistan withdrawal debacle. Fox News obtained an email sent with that message by Kirby on the anniversary of 9/11 as a “reply all” likely meant for his staffers. “Clearly, I didn’t realize you were on the chain,” Kirby said about his initial email, Fox reported. The high-profile spokesman sent the email about not responding to some military veterans to address questions from Fox News about Kirby’s providing cover for the Biden-Harris administration on its hurried departure from Afghanistan in August 2021.  READ THE FULL STORY AT THE DAILY SIGNAL

Kamala Harris silent on whether she still supports ‘transgender operations on illegal aliens that are in prison’

By Tyler O'Neil | Daily Signal At Tuesday night’s debate, former President Donald Trump said his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, supports “transgender operations on illegal aliens that are in prison.” Harris looked on skeptically, suggesting Trump was off his rocker. Yet Harris has indeed supported transgender medical interventions on illegal alien prisoners, and she has not publicly disavowed the claim. Her campaign did not respond to The Daily Signal’s request for comment about it. Some legacy media outlets rushed to “fact-check” Trump’s claim. Time magazine’s story on the debate originally blasted Trump’s quote as false. Time later appended this correction: READ THE FULL STORY AT THE DAILY SIGNAL

Gray: The desperation at the heart of the Harris candidacy

By Freddy Gray, Commentary | The Spectator Barack Obama wrote The Audacity of Hope. The Kamala Harris story of 2024 could be called The Audacity of Desperation. Her brief candidacy has been an awesome display of chutzpah. With just weeks to go before the election, a panicked Democratic Party pushed aside their failing commander-in-chief and replaced him with Harris, the distinctly unpopular vice-president. She was then shamelessly presented to America and the world as an agent of change, even though she has no clear vision or agenda of her own. Twelve days have passed since Kamala Harris accepted the nomination and still her campaign website offers no clues as to what she might do as president. She has made some noises that sound a bit like policies. She’ll protect abo...
Could an election-reform initiative really help the business community?

Could an election-reform initiative really help the business community?

By Ed Sealover | The Sum & Substance To the average business owner struggling to keep up with inflation and new regulations, electoral reform may not seem like an issue that should be at the top of their priority list. But former DaVita CEO Kent Thiry would beg to differ. Thiry, no stranger to election fights, is spearheading a ballot initiative this year that would upend the way Coloradans vote in statewide primary and general elections. Proposition 131 is drawing criticism from party leaders, unions and senior groups for being confusing and self-serving to the businessman, ensuring that it will be one of the more talked-about measures on what will be a crowded ballot this fall. First ballots mailed out closer to the Biden-Harris switcheroo than Election Day

By Elle Purnell | The Federalist A lot has happened in the past two months. Donald Trump survived a bullet to the head by a would-be assassin; Joe Biden failed to survive a presidential debate. Kamala Harris has been the Democrats’ replacement candidate for such a short period of time that media are still talking about a Harris “honeymoon” — and she just got around to releasing a policy platform this week. And yet, the first ballots are already in the mail and on their way to voters. Alabama, the first state to drop ballots in the mail, started shipping them out on Wednesday to absentee ballot applicants as well as military and overseas voters. There are 55 days between Wednesday, the official start of election season, and Nov. 5, the date that still bears the moniker of...

Comer unveils wide-ranging hearing on Biden-Harris ‘failed record’

By Elizabeth Elkind  | Fox News The House Oversight Committee is planning a hearing next week broadly targeting Biden-Harris administration policies and their effect on Americans, Fox News Digital has learned. Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., is scheduling the hearing – titled, "A Legacy of Incompetence: Consequences of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Policy Failures" – for Thursday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m. ET. Comer accused President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris of causing "skyrocketing inflation, the worst border crisis in American history, high energy prices, chaos around the world, and rampant waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement at federal agencies," in a statement to Fox News Digital on Thursday. ABC Debate ‘moderators’ shamelessly shielded Harris from her record

By Ben Shaprio | Daily Signal In the lead-up to this week’s presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, the polls showed a dead heat, both nationally and in seven swing states. The 2024 race is, by all measures, the closest presidential race we have seen in our lifetimes. But the usual presidential math applies: The person upon whom the race becomes a referendum loses.  For Trump, then, the task of the debate was threefold: to hammer the point that Vice President Kamala Harris is responsible for the failed policies of the Biden-Harris White House, and that he is the agent of change—a proposition with which the majority of Americans tend to agree; to drive home that Harris is actually dangerously far left, and that she is lying about her current po...
