Born for Battle: A New Identity, A New Fight

By Drake Hunter | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.~ 2 Corinthians 5:17 ~ Most of us remember the classic story “The Ugly Duckling.” A small bird is born on a farmyard, but something about him seems… off. The ducks mock him. The chickens peck at him. Everywhere he goes, the message is the same: “You’re awkward.” “You don’t belong.” “Something must be wrong with you.” So, the little duck grows up believing the lie: This is just who I am. Now, I’ve always felt a personal connection to that story. My name is Drake, and for those who may not know, a drake is literally a male duck. Not eagle. Not lion. Not stallion. Duck! So if anyone should understand the Ugly Duckling story, it’s me. ...

Special edition: The Iranian War — the fiery darts of war

By Drake Hunter | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice "Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the fiery darts of the evil one."~ Ephesians 6:16 ~ I understand war. Not just as a headline or political talking point, but as someone who spent over twenty years in active duty military service and now lives with a 70% service-connected disability as a vet. During those years, wars came and went — Desert Storm, Afghanistan, Iraq, and countless endless conflicts that most Americans eventually stopped paying attention to. But when you serve long enough, you realize something: war is never just about nations. It is about human hearts. Today, the world again witnesses rising tensions between Israel, Iran, and the United States. Missiles are flying. Alliances...

Weapons of War: Spirit Over Flesh

By Drake Hunter | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” ~ Matthew 26:41 ~ Years ago, Sherrie and I ended up at one of those unforgettable Las Vegas timeshare presentations. You probably know the kind: a free stay, free breakfast, and free show tickets, all for just '90 minutes' of your time. Before we realized it, nearly three hours had gone by. The room was dim, beach scenes played on the screen, and soft music filled the air, almost like a Hallmark movie. The salesman encouraged us, saying, “Don’t overthink this. What does your gut tell you?” I noticed couples leaning in, whispering, nodding, and dreaming about more than just numbers. In that moment, it felt right. Bu...

Christmas Is More Than Tradition It Is a Claim That Changed History

By Tom Griffin | Commentary, The Daily Signal The Christmas celebration is one of joy and excitement. No matter your age there is always something special about Christmas morning and the days that follow. We know that we are a part of something unique and everlasting. Truly, Christmas reveals so much about life, faith and family. First, Christmas shows what life is about and what life’s goal is. These days are meant to invoke a sense of deep wonder. The Christian claim is that the God of the universe, who made the billions of stars and billions of galaxies—the God who knows everything about you—became man and was born of a woman. It is one thing to claim that God is real. “About nine-in-ten U.S. adults believe in God or another higher power,” according...

Good News or Fake News: Peace — Real News with Integrity

By Drake Hunter | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice If hope teaches us to look forward, then peace teaches us how to stand firm right now. But here’s the tension every Coloradan feels—especially during the holidays: We live in a culture that profits from our anxiety. Fear sells. Outrage spreads. And when everything is loud, peace is mistaken for passivity… when in reality, peace is a kind of strength, a power that shapes who you are. Therefore, the question for you is, “What source is shaping who you are—the Good News or the fake news?” Because trusting the Good News builds confidence in the peace you carry. Or in other words, PEACE is Real News with Integrity. It’s not fragile. Peace is not the absence of conflict. Simply, peace is the inner integrity of a life aligned...

Good News or Fake News: Hope — Waiting for the Real News

By Drake Hunter | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice When you look for hope, peace, joy, and love in your relationships and reality during this Advent Season, what source is shaping who you are—the Good News or the fake news? Across Colorado, the nation, and around the world, people start their day scrolling through headlines, alerts, predictions, and debates. The news cycle never stops. It rarely offers hope. But here’s a question at the start of this Advent season: How much of what influences you every day is genuine good news, and how much is cleverly disguised fake news? And here’s a more personal take: When you seek direction, identity, and meaning… are you following the real Jesus—or a version filtered and edited by the loudest voices of our time? Advent isn’t just...

Standing Firm — The Full Armor of God

By Pastor Drake Hunter | Commentary, Elevation Life Church Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. ~ Ephesians 6:13 ~ There’s a moment in every spiritual battle when you realize that the goal isn’t to fight harder—it’s to stand stronger. When Paul wrote, “after you have done everything, to stand,” he wasn’t calling for passive endurance; he was calling for a posture of steadfast faith, hope, and perseverance— anchored, alert, and armored in Christ. Your faith is the rock on which you stand, unwavering and secure. Standing firm isn’t about standing still; it’s about standing in truth—whether that’s Divine, Biblical, or Christian Truth (Worldview: Fear...

Preparing for Battle — The Full Armor of God

By Pastor Drake Hunter | Commentary, Elevation Life Church “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” ~ 1 Peter 5:8 ~ When Peter wrote these words, he wasn’t describing a paranoid state of mind—he was describing a prepared one. Being alert and sober-minded means living fully awake—alert in God’s love and clear-minded in Christ’s truth. I learned that lesson the hard way after my time in the Air Force. When I retired after two decades of service, I thought I was good to go. I’d been trained to stay sharp, follow procedures, stay mission-focused, and even trust in God. But mentally and spiritually, I let my guard down. I believed I was living for Christ, but in truth, I was livi...

Want to be happier? Be thankful this Thanksgiving

By Russ Minary | Guest Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice “When it comes to life, the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.” (G. K. Chesterton) This year on Thursday Nov. 27th, our nation celebrates the official Federal holiday of Thanksgiving. President George Washington created this annual celebration with his Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1789, stating “…it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor (and)… to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them a...

Colorado mom shows what courage and conviction looks like on the campaign trail

By Nicole Hunt | Commentary, Daily Citizen I recently ran and was elected to my local school board. Running for office was a learning experience in more ways than one, but there are three important lessons I learned on the campaign trail that will stay with me for life.   When I first felt the nudge to step forward, I took time to talk to my family and pray about it. As a mother with sincere convictions, but no interest in being a career politician, I wanted to make sure the timing was right for my family. My husband and I have four children — two in high school and two in middle school. My family is the first and most important priority in my life after my faith in Jesus Christ. As we began to discuss the idea, I was encouraged by my kids who said, “Mom, you are perfect for ...
