Denver Neighborhood Blindsided by Plans for 400 Bed Homeless Shelter

Northeast Denver residents of Clayton learned online that the city wants to build its second-largest homeless shelter in their neighborhood. Then they gathered on Tuesday night to blast city officials for failing to tell them about the city’s plans.  “It feels kind of disingenuous to say we need more shelter space over here,” said Jes Driscoll, who sits on the board of the registered neighborhood group Clayton United. “That space is prime. It’s such a great spot for housing options. Shelter is not a housing option. Salvation Army exit highlights strain of Denver’s homelessness experiment

By Deborah Smith | Colorado Politics The Salvation Army will cease managing operations at three of Denver’s hotel-turned-homeless shelters after fulfilling its current contracts with the city, according to a statement from the group on Thursday. Those contracts run through 2025. Citing the need to ensure “financial stability,” officials from the organization said the decision affects The Aspen and Stone Creek shelters, both located on Quebec Avenue in northeast Denver, and the Tamarac Family Shelter just off Hampden Avenue and I-25.
