Hunters And Anglers Across Colorado Confront Growing Drought Crisis

By Katie Fisher | The Collegian As Colorado faces the lowest snowpack the state has seen in over four decades, 5 million residents across the state have been left to confront how they must adjust their behavior in response to increasing drought conditions. While watering restrictions become more common, some have been forced to reconsider their activities close to land and livelihoods. Big-game hunting is categorized by the practice of hunting large animals on a tag-based licensure system applicable to the state’s public lands. Similarly, angling requires a fishing license in the state of Colorado.  Both sports take several types of strength, according to Kara Van Hoose, a public information officer for C...

Heated Debate Over Furbearer Hunting Prompts Increased Security At Colorado Wildlife Meeting

By Tracy Ross | The Colorado Sun A CPW official cited large turnout and “detailed information about public testimony” as reasons for checking people for weapons at the door at the Wednesday meeting. Tension over furbearer regulations has prompted increased security for the Colorado Parks and Wildlife commission meeting Wednesday, when commissioners will vote on petitions from opposing groups focused on hunting and trapping of animals for their fur, including fox, coyote, beaver, bobcat, pine marten and otters.  CPW has encouraged attendees to arrive early to the meeting at the Double Tree Inn in Westminster where the agency will enforce the hotel’s ban on firearms and weapons by conducting security checks prior to entry.  CPW is taking the ...

Arizona Activist Group Revives Effort To Block Wildlife Fur Sales In Colorado

By Savana Kascak | Complete Colorado DENVER–An out-of-state animal rights group is back for another swing at banning the sale of wildlife fur in Colorado. As with a previous, failed attempt, hunting, fishing and conservation interests are lining up in opposition. As previously reported by Complete Colorado, the Tucson, Arizona-based Center for Biological Diversity filed a citizens’ petition for rulemaking in June, 2025 urging the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Commission to amend agency regulations to “prohibit the commercial sale, barter, or trade of wildlife fur in Colorado.” While that effort never made it past commissioners, the petition has been filed again for another round in 2026 and will be heard by the CPW commission in early March. &nb...

New numbers show Colorado’s gun culture remains strong

By Nate Wilde | COOL 107.9 FM How Many of Colorado's Residents Are Gun Owners? Despite all of the factors that contribute to the aforementioned 45.1% of Colorado households being home to guns, every one of the states that border the Centennial State has reported higher rates of gun ownership. Nebraska barely leads Colorado in gun ownership, with a rate of 45.2%, while New Mexico reports a gun ownership rate of 46.2%, Arizona reports a gun ownership rate of 46.3%, and Utah reports another comparable gun ownership rate of 46.8% The percentage of households that claim to be gun owners rises when we get to Kansas, a state that reports a 48.9% gun ownership rate, but two of Colorado's neighboring states rank much higher than the rest. These states are Oklahoma and ...

From Wyoming to Colorado: courts say corner crossing is legal

By Rachel Gabel | The Fence Post A ruling by a federal appeals court has concluded that a congressional act preempts a state’s power to impose and enforce its own trespass laws. Corner crossing, accessing public land from one piece to another where two parcels meet with two privately owned parcels without stepping foot on privately owned land, is now legal in the 10th Circuit’s six states: Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Oklahoma and Kansas. A Carbon County, Wyoming, ranch owner sued hunters in 2022 for doing just that, arguing that he owns the airspace above his land, which they passed through to access public land during an elk hunt. The checkerboard pattern dates back to the days of railroad construction in the 1800s, when railroads raced to lay track, thereby laying cla...

Colorado bill, removing hunting as priority method for wildlife management, fails in House committee

By Marianne Goodland | Colorado Politics Animal rights groups lost at the ballot box last November in their efforts to ban big-cat hunting and trapping, but the fight was not over, as some lawmakers pushed to remove hunting, trapping and fishing as "primary" methods for "necessary wildlife harvests." The proposal ultimately died in the House Agriculture, Water and Natural Resources Committee on Thursday. Sponsored by Reps. Tammy Story, D-Evergreen, and Elizabeth Velasco, D-Glenwood Springs, House Bill 1258 would replace replace language in one of the statutes governing Colorado Parks and Wildlife to say the state "may" — instead of "shall" — authorize hunting, trapping and fishing and that decision would be "based on best available wildlife and ecological science to benefit wildli...

Fremont County Commissioners against initiative that would prohibit hunting of mountain lions

By Carie Canterbury | Canon City Daily Record During Tuesday’s meeting, the Fremont County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution opposing Colorado Ballot Initiative 91, which would prohibit the hunting of mountain lions. The resolution states that “respectful and responsible hunting is a time-honored tradition in Colorado and it is the policy of the state of Colorado that the state’s wildlife and their environment are to be protected, preserved, enhanced, and managed for the use, benefit, and enjoyment of the people of this state and its visitors.” It goes on to read that “an unmanaged population of large predators will inevitably lead to increased human conflict, on both agricultural and residential lands” and “sapient citizens need look no further than the bloody and fin...
