ICE detention cases are surging in Colorado. The DOJ keeps losing the legal fight.

By Shaina Cole | Contributing Writer, Rocky Mountain Voice Five people filed habeas corpus petitions challenging their Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention in all of Colorado federal court in 2024. One hundred five filed in 2025. Through June 15th of this year, 722 have filed, and the pace has held at more than 150 a month since March. Every one of those cases carries attorney fee exposure when the government loses. Of the cases resolved on the core detention question so far — spanning late 2025 and 2026 — Colorado judges granted the petition 248 times. Only one judge, Chief Judge Daniel Domenico, has ruled for the government on the merits — and he has done so repeatedly. Colorado Democrats Advance New Oversight Rules For ICE Facilities

By Marissa Ventrelli | The Denver Gazette Colorado state representatives voted along party lines to pass a bill establishing additional inspection requirements for immigration detention centers and expanding civil liabilities related to sharing information with federal immigration authorities. It’s the latest proposal to come out of the state Capitol, which has embraced so-called “sanctuary laws,” which limit or prohibit cooperation with federal authorities on enforcing immigration laws. By Brandon Richard | Denver7 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has responded to criticism the agency received from members of Colorado’s Democratic delegation following a tour of an Aurora detention facility Monday, accusing the lawmakers of demanding special treatment and “making up lies.” Representatives Jason Crow (CO-6), Brittany Pettersen (CO-7), Joe Neguse (CO-2) and Diana DeGette (CO-1) paid a visit to the ICE facility Monday, claiming they faced obstacles in conducting routine oversight. Crow claimed an “unacceptable” lack of transparency during the tour, which was granted three weeks after the congressman said he was denied access for an unannounced visit.
