Federal Judge Blocks Colorado Law Expanding State Oversight of ICE Facility

By Amanda Pampuro | Courthouse News Service Months before reports of tuberculosis infecting a detainee at an immigration detention center in Aurora, state lawmakers sought to expand the public health department’s ability to inspect the facility. DENVER (CN) — A federal judge granted a preliminary injunction Thursday blocking a Colorado law that sought to expand the state public health agency’s ability to inspect an immigrant detention facility in Aurora. “HB-1276 applies only to civilian detention centers, of which there is one,” Chief U.S. District Judge Daniel Domenico wrote in the opinion. “Though Colorado argues that the law only brings GEO into compliance with existing state regulations applied to other detention facilities, that law singles out this o...

DHS Secretary Mullin Visits Colorado, Addresses Immigration Enforcement and Aurora TB Dispute

By Karen Morfitt | CBS Colorado A visit to Colorado this week by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin largely flew under the radar. Mullin visited Colorado's supermax prison, the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center and Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices in southern Colorado before holding a private meeting with Rep. Gabe Evans, a Republican who represents Colorado's 8th Congressional District, and Hispanic faith leaders. Mullin said on Friday he wanted to address what he called "false rumors" about immigration enforcement. "Being able to talk to faith leaders who can talk to their congregation about the actual facts instead of what they say online, I think they were very thankful," Mullin said. CBS Colorado caught up wit...

Socialist Backed Candidates Continue to Build Momentum in 2026

By: Newt Gingrich | Gingrich 360 The recent surge in endorsements by the Democratic Socialists of America for various electoral races — congressional, state, and local — is cause for concern. This year, the Democratic Socialists of America has endorsed 29 candidates for the House of Representatives. Of these, 11 have been defeated in their primaries, seven have won, and 11 are still awaiting their primaries. The importance of these endorsements lies in the positions held by some of these candidates. Here are a few examples of the candidates and their viewpoints: Melat Kiros, a former attorney, defeated 30-year incumbent Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District. Endorsed by both the DSA, Denver DSA, and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, Kir...

Federal Judges Rebuke Colorado Immigration Judge Over Repeated Bond Hearing Errors

By Michael Karlik | The Denver Gazette Multiple federal judges in Colorado have freed people from immigration custody after determining that one immigration judge violated their directives for properly conducting bond hearings. For nearly a year, Colorado’s U.S. District Court has faced a flood of habeas corpus petitions from those in immigration detention. The most common allegation is that the government is improperly denying bond hearings to people who are eligible by law. Colorado’s judges have largely agreed with that argument, and the Denver-based federal appeals court recently handed down a binding interpretation of the law confirming that view. However, that has not ended the legal battle. Federal judges, in granting habeas petitions, have t...

Trump Rolls Out Self-Funding Immigration Fee System With Tougher Enforcement

By Amanda Head | Just the News The new fees, including a $100 charge to apply for asylum and annual penalties for pending cases, also become a self-funding hammer to enforce stricter borders and deter abuse in a system that President Donald Trump has long derided as broken. On Wednesday, the Trump administration gave notice of the start of a sweeping array of new immigration fees, creating a no-lose scenario where the new fees either deter applicants from coming, thus reducing immigration, or they proceed with their application, putting more money into resources to scrutinize claims. The rollout, triggered by notices under last year's “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” signed last year, layers fresh costs onto everything from work permits for protection seekers to juv...

Town of Hudson Sued Over Approval Process for Planned ICE Detention Center

By: Nicole C. Brambila | The Denver Gazette A nonprofit organization filed a lawsuit against the Town of Hudson Wednesday, challenging plans to reopen a former federal prison in the town as a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility. Together Colorado, along with Janet E. Carlson, filed the case in Colorado District Court in Weld County, alleging the town is not “powerless to act” and that the proposed detention facility violates the town’s zoning laws. “Under Colorado law, Hudson has not only the authority but the obligation and the duty to treat the proposed facility the way it would treat any other new facility proposed within the Town: by applying and enforcing its own Land Development Code,” the lawsuit says. In addition to the ...

Court Documents Detail Suspect’s Account In Aurora ICE Protest Shooting

By: Alliyah Sims | KDVR FOX31 AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) – Newly released court documents revealed more details about the moments that led to the shooting of a protester outside the Aurora ICE Processing Center, including what the suspect told investigators after the gunfire. According to the arrest affidavit, Brandon Booth admitted he intentionally pulled the trigger during the July 16 shooting but told police he was trying to scare two protesters and never intended to hit anyone. Booth told investigators he became angry after he says protesters made comments about his children, and that they allegedly threatened to show up at their school, which he said sent his anger to a “15 out of 10.” He said he believed the comments were threatening, but he also acknowledged th...

Federal Judge Dismisses Mesa Sheriff Challenge to Colorado Immigration Law

By Michael Karlik | The Denver Gazette A federal judge dismissed a challenge from Mesa County Sheriff’s Office leaders last week to a Colorado law limiting public employees’ cooperation with immigration authorities, concluding that the plaintiffs did not allege they engage in any conduct that the law would prohibit. In a July 17 order, U.S. District Court Judge Gordon P. Gallagher noted that lawmakers only forbade the sharing of personal information “for the purpose of” immigration enforcement. Even then, the law contains exceptions for authorized criminal investigations or necessary duties. “The Court respects that Plaintiffs’ wish to ensure they understand, both for individual reasons and on behalf of the agencies they head or work for, the current bounds of the law ...

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Four people were detained and cited Monday after a tense standoff with law enforcement outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Centennial, as protests continued for a fourth day following a shooting at a nearby ICE detention facility. The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office says the four were detained, cited and released at the scene after they were "warned multiple times to stop impeding operation of a public building." The protests began after reports of health concerns inside the Aurora Processing Center. Adams County health officials pre...
