Federal judge extends Colorado deportation ban tied to 1798 law as legal fight escalates

By Nicholas Riccardi | Associated Press DENVER (AP) — A federal judge has extended her order temporarily preventing the Trump administration from moving or deporting anyone from Colorado under an 18th century wartime act that has become ensnared in a U.S. Supreme Court battle. District Court Judge Charlotte N. Sweeney cited the high court’s weekend order barring removal of anyone from North Texas, where the ACLU had contended the administration was preparing to deport Venezuelans under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 without giving them the legal notice required under a prior Supreme Court ruling. Sweeney continued her freeze on removals from Colorado until May 6 and indicated she may extend it further. She required the federal government to provide 21 days’ notice to a...

Cole: Denver’s dangerous dance with low cash bail and ICE detainer policies puts public safety at risk

By Shaina Cole | Guest Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice Denver prides itself on progressive values and compassion for its diverse communities. But recent events have exposed a troubling reality: the city’s criminal justice policies—specifically low cash bail for serious felony offenses and short notification windows for ICE detainers—are creating a revolving door for dangerous criminals, putting our neighborhoods at risk.  The case of Bayron Turcios-Murillo, a confirmed Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang member, is a stark example of how these policies fail to protect the public while allowing violent offenders to slip through the cracks. On April 17, 2025, Bayron Turcios-Murillo was arrested in Denver for felony drug charges, allegedly possessing nearly 1,000 fentanyl pills and powde...

Operation Take Back America: Illegal immigrants charged after hauling 180K rounds of ammo into Colorado

By Logan Smith | CBS News Colorado Two residents of Mexico were recently arrested in Colorado while transporting 180,000 rounds of large-caliber ammunition. They were pulled over after driving toward deputies and failing to dim their van's headlights.  Two Fremont County detectives were driving on State Highway 50 in Cañon City on March 26, according to a federal arrest affidavit. The van was coming in the opposite direction and left its headlights on the highest setting as it passed the deputies' vehicle. It is against Colorado state law for a driver to fail to dim his or her vehicle's headlights when there is oncoming traffic within 500 feet of it. The detectives followed the white GMC passenger van to a gas station and pulled in behind it.  Both men inside the van ...

Colorado bill blocks deportation efforts, weakens citizenship path requirements

Colorado Peak Politics Colorado Democrats use a lot of energy and our tax dollars encouraging migrants to come here illegally and then remain as non-citizens, rather than promoting legal U.S. citizenship. And here they go again. A state Senate panel this week passed radical legislation to further restrict deportation activities of federal immigration officers in every Colorado city. Plus, the bill kills current requirements that migrants be actively pursuing legal citizenship when applying for a driver’s license or in-state tuition to a public university, which is subsidized by taxpayers. And shamefully, not a single reporter or Democrat voter is asking why the legislature is incentivizing non-citizens to retain their illegal status. The pending bill is SB25-276, and It’s...

DHS officials request IRS share tax data on up to 7 million illegal immigrants

By Hayden Cunningham | The Post Millennial The Department of Homeland Security is seeking access to confidential tax records from the Internal Revenue Service in an effort to locate as many as 7 million people believed to be in the United States illegally, according to a report by the Washington Post. DHS officials have previously requested information on approximately 700,000 individuals who are subject to final deportation orders, asking the IRS to provide names and addresses. The size of the request later expanded, with DHS officials saying they would submit preliminary queries for about 2 million people, which then rose to 7 million. However, the two agencies have yet to reach an agreement on how much tax information the IRS is willing to disclose. La...

Wi-Fi jammers and trackers: The new face of organized burglary hits Aurora

By Sofia Joucovsky | Denver Post Five people suspected of burglarizing 21 homes in Aurora have been formally charged by the Arapahoe County District Court. The suspects, all Colombian nationals, each were charged with criminal attempt to commit second-degree burglary and conspiracy to commit second-degree burglary, but the charges still could be changed or modified, Eric Ross, spokesperson for the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s office, said. They are being held in an Immigrant and Customs Enforcement detention facility. The suspects are accused of robbing 21 Aurora homes by placing cameras around victims’ houses and trackers in their cars, following and watching them, and then using WiFi signal jamming technology to bypass alarm systems, according to Joe Moylan, Au...

Gelman: Judges, stay in your lane and stay out of politics

By David Gelman | The Hill , Commentary One of the best pieces of advice you can give anyone starting a venture is this: Be bold, but stay in your lane. In other words, know your role, understand what you don’t know and avoid straying into areas beyond your expertise. That’s advice certain federal district court judges would do well to heed — for the good of our republic and the health of the judiciary itself.  As the Trump administration moves forward with efforts to remove illegal immigrants, including violent Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang members, the role of federal judges — specifically activist liberal district court judges — has come under serious scrutiny. While Democrats continue to distract their base with false narratives and manufactured crises, they conveniently igno...

Trump Admin to crack down on public housing for illegal aliens

By Spencer Lindquist | Daily Wire The Trump administration is working to prevent illegal aliens from accessing public housing, with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) teaming up to end the “wasteful misappropriation” of taxpayer money. The two federal agencies laid out their plans in a memorandum of understanding, stating that they will share data and work together to identify illegal aliens who are currently in public housing. “We will safeguard precious taxpayer resources, and we will stop the harmful practices of the former Biden administration, which favored and prioritized illegal aliens over American citizens in the expenditure of housing funds and subsidies,” the memo reads, also adding that the measure is intended to “hel...

Fabbricatore: Sanctuary policies are costing Colorado millions—here’s how

By John Fabbricatore | Guest Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice The City and County of Denver has been an unofficial "sanctuary" for illegal immigrants for decades, but its status as an official sanctuary city—protecting criminal aliens from arrest and deportation—dates back to 2013. That much is well known and understood by everyone in Colorado with an interest in the "sanctuary issue."  But what is not well understood across Colorado today is that now, the entire state of Colorado – all 64 counties – is a "sanctuary state" because of legislation enacted by Democrat majorities in both chambers of the state legislature.  The big difference in public safety is that in 2025, across Colorado’s 64 counties, hundreds of criminal aliens convicted under state law are being rel...

New Colorado law will fast-track process for immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses

By Kristian Lopez | Denver7 New immigrants will be able to apply for driver's licenses in Colorado immediately under a new law that goes into effect on March 31 A new Colorado law will speed up the process for new immigrants to obtain their driver's licenses. Colorado already allows undocumented immigrants to get driver’s licenses, but they currently must live in the state for at least two years before qualifying and provide a Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). SB24-182, which was signed into law by Governor Jared Polis in June of 2024, will drop those requirements. Denver7 spoke with Maria Valdez, a driving instructor at American Driving Academy in Aurora, who said this new law will benefit everyone in the state by making the roads safer....
