A massive spill of raw sewage and untreated wastewater into the Arkansas River in southeastern Colorado continues to wreak havoc on the region. Water in the river downstream of the spill, east of Pueblo, is still testing high for dangerous nasties like the bacteria E. coli. Colorado Parks and Wildlife on Wednesday issued advisories for people to stay away from the water in 10 state wildlife areas along the river, as well as the Las Animas State Fish Hatchery. Millions of Gallons of Untreated Sewage Spill Into Arkansas River Near Pueblo

By Chierstin Roth | CBS Colorado More than four million gallons of untreated sewage containing harmful bacteria were dumped into the Arkansas River in Pueblo this week. While officials are working to mitigate any potential impacts from the contamination in Pueblo and communities downstream, some residents are concerned for their health.  "We walked earlier today from the City Park all the way to Runyon for a good two-hour walk, and the whole entire time we were walking, you could just smell it," said Nicoel Candelario.  Candelario and her friend Romy walked around Pueblo for hours Sunday, mostly along the Arkansas River. DOC Lifts Statewide Visitation Ban At Most Facilities Following Deadly Prison Incident

By Jesse Sarles | CBS Colorado The Colorado Department of Corrections has lifted its suspension on visitations at all facilities statewide except one after a 27-year-old inmate and a 59-year-old inmate were killed and another was injured in an incident over the weekend at a southern Colorado prison. DOC spokesperson Alondra Gonzalez said the violent incident happened on Saturday in Las Animas at the Bent County Correctional Facility. No staff members were hurt. A lockdown was enacted right away. Recall effort of coroner by citizen-led group in Southeast Colorado falls short

By World Journal Staff A recall election to oust Las Animas County Coroner Dominic “Junie” Verquer will not be held, at least in the immediate future, after the registered citizens committee leading the effort failed to secure enough verified signatures, according to numbers obtained by the World Journal this week. Citizens for Coroner Accountability’s (CCA) signature campaign fell 346 verified signatures short of forcing a recall election, according to a tally obtained from the Las Animas County Clerk & Recorder’s Office. The citizen issue committee needed to obtain 1,253 signatures to spark a recall election and submitted 1,345 signatures, according to the paperwork.
