Loveland City Council Votes To Reset Homelessness Policy

By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado The city of Loveland is moving forward with two major changes to the way it is tackling homelessness in Northern Colorado. In a Loveland City Council meeting that lasted until nearly 2 a.m. Wednesday, the council finalized two votes to start making changes. "We have been a failure at (addressing homelessness). We need to do something different," said council member Kalina Middleton of ward three. The overall sentiment of everyone in attendance for the meeting was that Loveland needs to change the way it addresses topics involving the unhoused. Loveland Family Outraged After Charlie Kirk Memorial Burned

(KDVR) – A Loveland family is speaking out after the burning of their memorial to Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed on Sept. 10, during an event at Utah Valley University. The incident happened Saturday evening. In addition to the memorial being burned, the back window of the family’s SUV was smashed as five children slept inside the home. On Tuesday, the Loveland Police Department reported that they had arrested a suspect, David Hunt Gilroy, 64, who faces second-degree arson and resisting arrest charges in connection with the incident. “It’s a sign like are you kidding me, for a man that was wrongfully shot,” the father told FOX31. Suspect arrested after burning Charlie Kirk tribute in Northern Colorado

By Jennifer McRae | CBS News Police in Northern Colorado have arrested a suspect accused of burning a tribute to Charlie Kirk after Kirk's killing last week. Loveland police and fire officials investigated it as arson, according to the Loveland Police Department.  Police said the memorial was burned just before midnight on Saturday in the 200 block of East 23rd Street. A cloth sign draped over a resident's fence on that street read "RIP Charlie Kirk, we stand with you." In addition to the sign being burned, a rock was thrown through the rear windshield of a vehicle parked at the home, Loveland police said. Fire Destroys Loveland Family’s Tribute to Charlie Kirk

(KDVR) — Vandals burned a Loveland family’s memorial to Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed on Wednesday, Sept. 10, during a tour event at Utah Valley University. The family is not releasing their location or full names due to concern for their safety. They told FOX31 the vandals set the fence on fire at approximately 11:15 p.m. as five children slept inside the home. “When they burnt that fence, that fire could’ve went into that house and it could’ve really harmed somebody,” said one family friend. The funding is part of FNBO’s $1.73 million in grants distributed to 90 nonprofits in eight states. Horse rescued after falling into icy pond in Northern Colorado

By Jennifer McRae | CBS Colorado Fire crews with Loveland Fire Authority rescued a horse that had fallen into an icy pond in Northern Colorado. Crews rushed to the pond on South County Road 13 on Thursday where a horse found a way through the fence and onto a frozen pond.  Firefighters said the pond could not support the horse's weight and ended up in the icy waters in the middle of the pond. The horse could not get back to shore.  Firefighters donned ice rescue suits and broke apart the ice using axes and sledgehammers. Loveland residents may create new sales tax to replace tax they cut last year

By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado Less than one year after Loveland residents overwhelmingly voted to eliminate sales tax on most groceries, a shortfall in the city's budget has now led to some residents asking for a new sales tax to be created. The tax cut, which only applied to groceries purchased for at-home consumption, has now resulted in the city losing millions of dollars in revenue. As CBS News Colorado reported in the fall of 2023, the city warned residents that approving the tax cut would force funding to city services to be cut. The city's planners forecasted that the budget lost would not be deducted from public safety services like police and fire. Loveland wants to create street outreach program with opioid settlement funds

By Veronica Acosta | Denver 7 News To date, Colorado is on track to receive more than $750 million in opioid settlement funds from different pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors. The City of Loveland will receive $1.8 million after it opted into the settlement funds in 2021. The city hopes to create a street outreach program with part of the $340,000 it's already received. "It's really not enough money to be able to do something like build housing for people to go to recover, but it is enough money to start a street outreach program," said Alison Hade, the Community Partnership Office manager for the City of Loveland.
