Two obituaries, two standards: How media framing shapes the legacy of controversial figures

By Brian C. Joondeph | Commentary, American Thinker How corporate media soften tyrants abroad while sharpening labels at home. Death is supposed to clarify a life, not distort it. Obituaries are meant to record history, not rewrite it. But in today’s corporate media, even death cannot escape ideological spin. Consider the recent coverage of Ayatollah Ali Khameini, Iran’s Supreme Leader for more than three decades.  In the Washington Post, readers were introduced to a man with a “bushy white beard and easy smile,” an “avuncular figure” fond of Persian poetry and Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. Some acquaintances described him as a “closet moderate.” A closet moderate? That description might surprise the regime’s political prisoners — ...

MSNBC fires Matthew Dowd after attack on Charlie Kirk

By Joseph A. Wulfsohn | Fox News Dowd had suggested Kirk brought on assassination with 'hateful words' MSNBC has fired political analyst Matthew Dowd for suggesting "hateful" rhetoric from Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk led to his own assassination, two sources familiar with the matter told Fox News Digital.  The network previously denounced Dowd's comments on social media.  "During our breaking news coverage of the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable," MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler said in a statement. "We apologize for his statements, as has he. There is no place for violence in America, political or otherwise." A spokesperson for MSNBC declined to comment. Dowd joined MS...

Media Panics as Trump Era Policies Fuel Stronger Than Expected Growth

By Brianna Lyman | The Federalist For all the media’s breathless warnings and dire forecasts, the numbers show the economy isn’t collapsing under Trump’s tariffs. Better than expected,” CNBC’s Rick Santelli announced Wednesday morning as fresh data revealed the economy grew at a three percent rate in the second quarter. Data from the Commerce Department shows the U.S. economy expanded at an annual rate of three percent from April through June, surpassing economists’ forecast of approximately two percent growth. Inflation also continues to cool, with the annual rate of inflation at 2.1 percent in the second quarter, compared to 3.7 percent in the first. As CNBC’s Jeff Cox reported, the growth is “powered by a turnaround in the trade balance and renewed consumer strength.” And as...

Pew: Americans hit paywalls, but 83% refuse to pay for news

By Emily Tomasik and Michael Lipka | Pew Research Newspaper revenue has been in decline for decades, and most Americans now prefer to get news from digital devices. In this environment, many news organizations – and not just newspapers – put paywalls on their websites or apps, blocking access to articles or other content unless news consumers pay or subscribe. The vast majority of Americans (83%) say they have not paid for news in the past year, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in March. Another 17% say they have directly paid or given money to a news source by subscribing, donating or becoming a member during that time. At the same time, 74% run into paywalls at least sometimes when they are looking for news online. This includes 38% who say they ...

In Senate confirmation hearing, Pete Hegseth comes out swinging against anonymous smears

By Kristina Wong | Breitbart Defense Secretary Nominee Pete Hegseth came out swinging hard during his confirmation hearing on Tuesday against the orchestrated smear campaign against him pushed by the mainstream media. “A small handful of anonymous sources were allowed to drive a smear campaign and agenda about me, because our left wing media in America today, sadly, doesn’t care about the truth. All they were out to do [was] to destroy me. And why do they want to destroy me? Because I’m a change agent and a threat to them, because Donald Trump was willing to choose me, to empower me, to bring the Defense Department back to what it really should be, which is war fighting,” Hegseth said. “So I’m willing to endure these attacks, but what I will do is stand up for the truth and for my...
