With its control of migrant flow, Mexico seeks to play key role in US election

By David Agren , Kellen McGovern Jones , Virginia Allen  | The Daily Signal Jairo Salvador Salinas, a migrant from Honduras, was riding a northbound train toward the Mexico-U.S. border. But Mexican immigration officials detained him at a checkpoint near the city of Monterrey, just 100 miles south of the border. Instead of being deported back to Central America, he was put on a flight to southern Mexico. “I don’t have any support here,” he said from a shelter for migrants in Villahermosa, a city on the Gulf Coast closer to his native Honduras than the U.S. border.  Migrant encounters at the U.S. southwestern border have fallen precipitously throughout 2024 as migrants like Salinas are increasingly thwarted on their journeys through Mexico. Supreme Court to decide if Mexico can sue firearms makers over cartel violence

By Kaelan Deese | Washington Examiner The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to review a significant case that could determine whether Mexico can bring a $10 billion lawsuit against U.S. gun manufacturers for allegedly facilitating the flow of firearms to drug cartels. The case, revived by a federal appeals court, challenges the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), a 2005 law that generally shields gun manufacturers from civil liability when their products are used in criminal activities. A lower court initially dismissed Mexico’s lawsuit based on this law, but the 1st Circuit Court ruled that Mexico’s claims fit an exemption in the PLCAA, allowing the suit to move forward. By Bethany Blankley  | The Center Square via Daily Signal The U.S. House passed a bill last week to deport and make inadmissible criminal foreign nationals convicted of domestic violence and sex-related offenses, including sex crimes against children. It passed with bipartisan support but with the majority of Democrats, 158, voting against it. Sloan: In Mexico, don’t expect much to change with new President

By which to say they elected an extension of their previous one.  Claudia Sheinbaum, former mayor of Mexico City, won the election in what can only be described as a landslide for the ruling left-wing Morena Party. Sheinbaum happens to be Mexico’s first female President (it’s first Jewish one too, though it seems she likes to keep her Jewishness rather suppressed unless politically convenient.) More importantly, she is a protégé of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador known somewhat affectionately as “AMLO”.
