O’Donnell: Colorado isn’t creating jobs—it’s creating unemployment

By Mike O’Donnell | Guest Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice  January 2023 was a changeover month of sorts in the United States because it marked a division between the taxpayer subsidized COVID economy and the less subsidized post-COVID economy. According to the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, the United States added 3,149,000 jobs between January 2023 and June 2025, a 2.0 percent increase for the nation as a whole.  Employment growth so far this century has averaged just under one percent a year, so the 2.0 percent figure is roughly on track (although preliminary July BLS data are less positive and subject to revision). At the same time, unemployment increased by 1,268,000, a 22.1 percent rise. This is a less positive aspect of the economy that few seem ...

It’s why they decided to take their concerns to Pueblo City Council Members and speak out during the council’s work session on Monday evening. “It’s all over town from each and everybody’s district, we need our city back,” said Betty Finley, a resident who lives in the Bessemer neighborhood. One neighbor speaking out feels like more and more problems like drug use and trash are showing up, and feels helpless when trying to find anyone to help. “Right next door to us is another drug house, and it’s a revolving door for the homeless in and out, there’s people living in that backyard,” another neighbor who spoke out to c...

Pueblo sees uptick in fentanyl use

By Michelle Wells | KKTV PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - The Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment (PDPHE) monitors the use of drugs, like fentanyl, by testing wastewater. According to their wastewater dashboard, last month fentanyl use in Pueblo increased for the first time this year. In a statement from PDPHE they say, “In March, wastewater data showed 10.82mg per 1,000 people, per day. Comparatively, that number was around 5mg per 1,000 people, per day in January and February. Overall, this number is much lower compared to March 2024, when wastewater data showed 20.95mg per 1,000 people, per day.” This means fentanyl use last month was about half of what it was in March 2024. PDPHE also says, “Higher levels of fentanyl are cause for concern because the amount of fen...

Ganahl: Is the Pueblo mayor on a Republican revenge tour?

By Heidi Ganahl | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice Pueblo, Colorado, has become the backdrop for a politically charged controversy involving Republican Mayor Heather Graham and Pueblo conservatives.  Graham’s election to mayor over incumbent Democrat Nick Gradisar was a shock in 2023.  After decades of Democratic rule, conservatives celebrated a new direction in their beloved city.  The celebration didn’t last long.  Mayor Graham’s relationship with the Republican Party has soured significantly since her primary election. Feeling betrayed by Republican leaders who supported other candidates in her primary election, Graham has taken several steps that suggest a personal vendetta against the party, and conservatives in her city. Her most striking move came yester...

Pueblo City Council meets for proposed abortion ordinance

By Carolynn Felling | Fox 21 News The topic of banning abortion centers in Pueblo was back at the center of a heated discussion during a Pueblo City Council meeting on Monday, Sept. 23. In the meeting, three presentations were given touching on different abortion related topics. One of which is Amendment 79, a ballot measure that would create a right to abortion in Colorado and repeal the State Constitution’s ban on government funds for abortion. “I want to start by saying the only reason that we’re here having this hearing is because people’s feelings are hurt, that they can’t control women’s choices and bodies,” said City Council woman Sarah Martinez, District 3.
