Aftermath of Pueblo’s homeless encampment and trash clear out, a week later

By Eleanor Sheahan | KOAA News The City of Pueblo and the mayor have received both support and pushback about the way they are trying to clean up the steel city. Last week, the city cleared out trash and homeless camps along Fountain Creek. This clean up has brought forward many concerns over how the city is dealing with homelessness and whether or not the city is providing enough resources. Last week the area from the 8th Street to the 4th Street bridge was cleared out by the city. But people in Pueblo are at odds, some voicing support of this while others say there needs to be more resources for unhoused individuals. It began on Tuesday, September 3rd. In Pueblo, city is cleaning up homeless camps over concerns from some community members

By Carolynn Felling | Fox 21 News The City of Pueblo, along with Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad, is currently cleaning up homeless camps along Fountain Creek, as of Wednesday, Sept. 4, but not everyone is on board. Some people are worried the cleanup could displace around one hundred people, but Pueblo Mayor Heather Graham argues she only saw around five people camped in these areas when she walked through the camps last week. “[What] the city is doing, is using this as an excuse to displace unhoused people from their homes,” says Dr. Xan Kellogg a volunteer with Project Apollo. ‘Rally in the Rotunda’ kicks off Pueblo high school football rivalry week

By Dara Korn | Fox 21 Colorado Springs The legendary high school rivalry between Pueblo County High Schools is about to kick into high gear with the beginning of football season. For 17 years, the Rally in the Rotunda has allowed cheerleaders from rival teams to perform for the community before the Bell Game, Cannon Game, and the Pigskin Classic. The Rotunda in the historic Pueblo County Courthouse is decorated with school colors for the Pigskin Classic, which takes place on Friday, Aug. 30, between Pueblo County High School and Pueblo West High School. Pueblo County clerk’s office apologizes, is ‘disappointed’ after software update

Within the past week, both the recording and motor vehicle offices implemented upgrades to their software, which “we are disappointed to say have not met the expectations of our office or the needs of our valued constituents,” the clerk’s office said. Pueblo steel mill fire prompts pre-evac notices, triggers air quality concerns

By Mary Shinn | Colorado Springs Gazette A fire broke out Friday afternoon at the EVRAZ steel mill in Pueblo sending up a thick column of black smoke that was blowing north.  The fire triggered a shelter-in-place order and pre-evacuation order for homes near the expansive mill along Interstate 25 on the southern end of town. Pueblo County public health officials issued a public health alert Friday evening, recommending all Pueblo residents stay indoors and avoid outdoor activity through Sunday morning due to the amount of smoke in the air from the EVRAZ fire and the Vision Hills Fire.  The EVRAZ Fire broke out in a building primarily used for staging and storage and all employees evacuated safely, according to a statement from EVRAZ North America.
