Victor Marx Calls for Water Storage Expansion and Modern Infrastructure

By Marianne Goodland | The Denver Gazette Victor Marx, the Republican nominee for governor, took the spotlight Wednesday during the opening day of the Colorado Water Congress, laying out how he says the state should approach its water future. Marx told the standing-room-only audience in Steamboat Springs that he holds water rights himself, giving him a personal stake in Colorado’s water challenges. His proposed fix? More storage. “We can’t make it snow, we can’t make it rain, but we can decide whether we’re prepared for when the water comes,” he said. “So, I believe we should store water in good years. Wet years. Lord, please send it.” He said storage gives farmers and ranchers reliability, options for communities and reduces emergency decisions. “...

Disaster Declaration Issued as Routt County Wildfires Threaten Communities

By: Eugene Buchanan | The Denver Gazette Kris and Jenn Shea of Steamboat Springs were lucky. When the evacuation orders came for their home near the new “Green Ridge Fire” — which erupted near Stagecoach Reservoir, about 15 miles south of Steamboat, on Sunday at 1:45 p.m. and quickly spread to 94.3 acres by that evening — they were both out of town. Jenn was in Buena Vista, and Kris was fishing in Florida. But their friends were there to rally support and grab their belongings.  Fortunately, it didn’t come to that as the order was soon rescinded. But for Kris, it was touch-and-go with the fire spotting just a mile or two away.  “It was pretty surreal,” said Kris, who owns Cruiser’s Sub Shop. “I was in the middle of the Gulf and felt a little handcuffed. My wi...

Colorado Mountain Towns Feel Economic Pain After Historic Dry Winter

By Bernadette Berdychowski | Colorado Politics Rocky, snow‑starved slopes. Rivers rising too soon. Resorts shutting down in April. Drought rules spreading statewide. These aren’t just signs of a bad winter — they’re red flags. And now another one is flashing across the Rockies: falling sales‑tax revenues that threaten the budgets and stability of mountain towns already stretched thin. Sales‑tax revenues — a key measure of local spending and a major source of city funding — dropped across many Colorado mountain towns in the first months of the year, largely because the unusually dry winter kept visitors away. In December, some towns saw only slight declines or even small gains. In Breckenridge, businesses said tourists who had already booked their trips an...

Trump and Polis order flags to half-staff until Sunday following Minneapolis Catholic church shooting

By Heather Willard | Fox 31 DENVER (KDVR) — President Donald Trump and Governor Jared Polis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff beginning Wednesday through sunset on Sunday. A shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic school kills 2 children, injures 17 people Two children, ages 8 and 10, were killed and 17 people, including 14 children, were wounded in an act of violence the police chief called “absolutely incomprehensible.” All Colorado and U.S. flags will fly at half-staff until sunset Sunday, August 31, 2025, to honor the victims ...

Iconic ‘Ronald McDonald House’ in Steamboat Springs placed for sale

By Maddie Rhodes | KDVR-TV Fox 31 News A Steamboat Springs home with an indoor shooting range is going on the market for millions. Officially, it’s called the Cowboy Lodge, but locals refer to it as the “Ronald McDonald House.” While there’s no relation to McDonald’s, the multi-million dollar mansion, sitting near the slopes on Ski Trail Lane in Steamboat Springs, is known for its ode to the fast food joint, as it had a Ronald McDonald statue on the roof for years. According to Slifer Smith & Frampton Real Estate, over time, the house turned into an icon as skiers and boarders on the Steamboat Springs Ski Resort gondola would catch a glimpse of the interesting statue. Thus, the house was deemed the “Ronald McDonald House” by locals. READ THE FULL STORY AT KDVR-TV FOX 31 NEW...

Steamboat Springs rallies to save senior living community: “Critical to the character of our community”

By Spencer Wilson | CBS Colorado After falling into receivership, Casey's Pond, one of the only senior living communities of its kind for hundreds of miles, is now looking for an owner and tens of millions of dollars in order to stay operational.  That means that without help, the residents living at the facility will need to go somewhere else. Casey's Pond has the option for nursing care, independent living and levels in-between for senior citizens. It's cause for alarm -- not only for the employees and residents there but their families in town and the town itself. Steamboat Springs City Manager Gary Suiter said local organizations and fundraisers met Tuesday afternoon to assemble a team that will work towards producing the kind of cash needed to buy off the debt ...
