House passes SAVE America Act: Citizenship proof bill heads to Senate

By Jen Schumann | Rocky Mountain Voice In a tight 218–213 vote Wednesday, the House approved the SAVE America Act and sent it on to the Senate. U.S. Rep. Jeff Crank (CO-05) voted in favor of H.R. 7296, the SAVE America Act. “American elections are reserved for American citizens only,” Crank said after the vote. “The majority of American people want secure elections, and the SAVE America Act will require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.” The bill makes changes to the 1993 federal voter registration law, adding a requirement that applicants prove they are U.S. citizens. The bill updates 8 U.S.C. § 1325 and § 1326, the federal laws on illegal entry and reentry, and was received in the Senate on September 15, where it now awaits committee consideration. For first-time offenders, the penalty doesn’t change — up to six months in jail. But, anyone caught crossing again could face up to five years in prison and a fine. The bill also sets penalties for people who try to help others cross illegally. The biggest changes involve reentry after deportation. The baseline remains up to two years. But if someone has three or more misdemeanors involving drugs or crimes against others, or any felony, the maximum rises to 10...

Republicans hold a 220-215 seat advantage in the U.S. House, but one Republican has resigned, and two other Republicans have indicated their opposition to Johnson. By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Control of the U.S. House of Representatives will most likely come down to an estimated 24 toss up seats in November, according to the Cook Political Report ratings. Only one of those seats is in Colorado: the battleground 8th District pitting incumbent Democrat Yadira Caraveo against Republican Gabe Evans. Last week, Evans collected the support of the Libertarian who was in the race, which could mean a 2-3% swing in the outcome. The race was rated "even" prior to the announcement by the Cook Political Report. If Evans can win the seat, it would provide Republicans with a "plus-one" in the U.S. House.
