Dathan Jones announces U.S. Senate run, says he “Can no longer sit on the sidelines”

By Shaina Cole | Contributing Writer, Rocky Mountain Voice With housing prices climbing toward half a million dollars, grocery bills stretching household budgets, and energy policy battles intensifying across the state, Colorado’s affordability crisis is emerging as a defining issue of the 2026 U.S. Senate race. Jones said the direction Colorado is heading made sitting out no longer an option. “I'm running because I can no longer sit on the sidelines and wait for things to happen,” Jones said. “Somebody's gotta step up and do something, and my campaign is to serve all the citizens of Colorado and represent them in the U.S. Senate capacity to promote the desires of the people, bring them into a place of  truth, liberty and justice.” From the Pulpit to Politi...

House passes SAVE America Act: Citizenship proof bill heads to Senate

By Jen Schumann | Rocky Mountain Voice In a tight 218–213 vote Wednesday, the House approved the SAVE America Act and sent it on to the Senate. U.S. Rep. Jeff Crank (CO-05) voted in favor of H.R. 7296, the SAVE America Act. “American elections are reserved for American citizens only,” Crank said after the vote. “The majority of American people want secure elections, and the SAVE America Act will require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.” The bill makes changes to the 1993 federal voter registration law, adding a requirement that applicants prove they are U.S. citizens. Anyone registering for a federal election would need to provide documentary proof of citizenship. The bill also lays out what counts as proof of citizenship. A REAL ID that...

Pressure Mounts on Senate GOP to Fight for the SAVE America Act

By Virginia Grace McKinnon | The Daily Signal Ahead of an expected vote on the SAVE America Act in the House, nearly 100 conservative leaders are urging the Senate to pass the election integrity measure using the talking filibuster. The SAVE America Act, an updated version of the SAVE Act, would secure America’s elections by requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote and requiring voter identification. The bill, introduced by Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, in the House and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, in the Senate, is expected to pass the House this week. Conservatives are now calling on Senate Republicans to do everything in their power to pass this legislation. https://twitter.com/RepChipRoy/status/2017274977259798917?s=20 RE...

Why a voter ID filibuster could become a 24/7 GOP campaign ad

By Rachel Bovard | Commentary, The Federalist What if I told you Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has the power and the votes — right now — to save Republicans’ congressional majorities, President Trump’s second-term agenda, and may be the republic itself, all while poleaxing Democrats on the short side of an 84-15 issue? It sounds like fantasy. But like the Lady of the Lake from Arthurian legend, 2026 is offering up to the GOP a political weapon almost as powerful as Excalibur itself: an extended Democrat talking filibuster of national voter ID legislation. Popular Idea, Toxic Opposition Requiring voters to prove their citizenship is one of the most popular ideas in the country, with 84 percent of Americans supporting and only 15 percent opposed....

SAVE Act Gains Momentum as GOP Pushes Citizenship Verification to Vote

By Nicholas Ballasy | Just the News Republican Sens. Katie Britt of Alabama and Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania announced they are now cosponsoring the legislation, which was introduced by GOP Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Rick Scott of Florida, last year. Two Senate Republicans on Wednesday rallied behind the House-passed Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote for federal elections. The new push comes amid pressure from conservative figures, including Elon Musk, and as the Trump administration pushes states to clean up their voter rolls to eliminate potentially illegal voters ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.  Republican Sens.&nb...

Bill Passes House of Representatives to End Federal Protections for Gray Wolves

By Kris Millgate | Outdoor Life The bill, known as the Pet and Livestock Protection Act, seeks to delist gray wolves from the Endangered Species Act Gray wolves in the Lower 48 have bounced on and off the Endangered Species Act list for years now. And on Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that would remove federal protections yet again and bring wolf management back to the states. The Pet and Livestock Protection Act cleared the House by a vote of 211 to 204. The bill, sponsored by Reps. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO), aims to delist the populations of gray wolves that remain protected under the ESA in 44 states. Stop Illegal Entry Act reaches Senate with 10–20 year sentences for criminal reentrants

By Shaina Cole | Contributing Writer, Rocky Mountain Voice The House voted 226–197 to pass the Stop Illegal Entry Act of 2025 (H.R. 3486). The bill updates 8 U.S.C. § 1325 and § 1326, the federal laws on illegal entry and reentry, and was received in the Senate on September 15, where it now awaits committee consideration. For first-time offenders, the penalty doesn’t change — up to six months in jail. But, anyone caught crossing again could face up to five years in prison and a fine. The bill also sets penalties for people who try to help others cross illegally. The biggest changes involve reentry after deportation. The baseline remains up to two years. But if someone has three or more misdemeanors involving drugs or crimes against others, or any felony, the maximum rises to 10...

Senate backs Trump’s ‘DOGE cuts’ as conservatives target foreign aid, woke grants

By David Sivak | Washington Examiner Congress is poised to claw back billions in foreign aid after the Senate narrowly passed $9 billion in DOGE-inspired cuts on Thursday. In a 51-48 vote, the Senate approved the White House request, known as a rescission bill, all but clearing the way for it to become law. Just two Republicans – Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) – joined Democrats in voting “no.” The request now heads back to the House, which narrowly passed a similar version in June. Thursday’s vote, which came after a marathon voting session that stretched late into the night, is a major victory for President Donald Trump and a 180–degree turn from an unsuccessful rescission request Trump made in his first term. Centri...
