O’Donnell: Behind the headlines, Colorado’s job growth tells a different story

By Mike O’Donnell | Guest Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice Last week, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released April 2025 job creation numbers by state. The national numbers were released earlier in the month and for the nation as a whole 177,000 new jobs were created in April, and this was considered a “solid” number by those who consider themselves experts. Colorado’s share of that total was 8,400 and those same experts consider that an “exceptionally solid” month for Colorado. Somewhere, champagne corks were likely popped. Nonetheless, behind every number is a story and that story for Colorado is quite revealing.  Yes, Colorado added 8,400 new jobs in April – but 5,500 (65%) were in bars and restaurants, and 4,500 (54%) in health care and social assistance. ...

Elon Musk’s DOGE discovers millions in taxpayer dollars wasted on unemployment claims for ‘fake people’

By Patrick Reilly | New York Post Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) revealed in a bombshell finding that millions of dollars in unemployment claims have been going to “fake people” who haven’t even been born yet — some not even in this century. DOGE claimed it reviewed an initial survey of unemployment claims since 2020 that found that 9,700 people whose birth dates aren’t for another 15 years have claimed $69 million in benefits. In one absurd case, a person whose birthday was listed in the year 2154 claimed $41,000, according to an X post by the department. READ THE FULL STORY AT THE NEW YORK POST

U.S. Unemployment Rate Falls To 4.0%, Economy Added 143,000 Jobs In January

By John Carney | Breitbart Employers in the United States added 143,000 workers to their payrolls in January, the Department of Labor said Friday, and the unemployment rate slipped to 4.0 percent. Economists had been expecting 168,000 jobs and an unemployment rate unchanged at 4.1 percent, according to a survey by Econoday. The figures are seasonally adjusted. In January, there is typically a large downshift in employment in the retail sector, as businesses downsize following the holiday shopping season. Without seasonal adjustment, the data show the economy shed nearly 2.9 million jobs in January. READ THE FULL STORY AT BREITBART

Fed Chair Jerome Powell says immigration surge boosted unemployment rate

By Michelle Wells | Fox Business Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday that immigration is helping push the unemployment rate higher as they enter the labor force and look for jobs. Powell was asked about whether the level of job creation in the economy, which has been a little more than 100,000 on average for the last three months, is alarming and if the labor market can continue slowing down through fewer job openings as opposed to job losses. "On the job creation… it depends on the inflows," Powell said. "So if you're having millions of people come into the labor force, and you're creating 100,000 jobs, you're going to see unemployment go up. So it really depends on what's the trend underlying the volatility of people coming into the country." "We understand the...

Unemployment Claims in Colorado Rise, Reflecting National Trend

By The Lobby Unemployment claims in Colorado saw an increase last week, mirroring the national trend, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The data released by the Labor Department on Thursday revealed that initial filings for unemployment benefits in the state rose to 2,396 in the week ending January 27, up from 2,312 the previous week. This rise in new jobless claims serves as a proxy for layoffs and is indicative of the challenges faced by workers in Colorado. This increase in unemployment claims is part of a broader national trend. Across the United States, unemployment claims reached 224,000 last week, an increase of 9,000 claims from the previous week on a seasonally adjusted basis. Oregon experienced the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims soa...
