Thick wildfire smoke from fires surrounding state will arrive in Colorado by today

By Joe Ruch | CBS COLORADO We are in the thick of fire season across the Western United States. No fires are currently burning across Colorado, but hundreds of fires are actively burning as seen on the Watch Duty map. Critical fire weather will make a return tomorrow, so please avoid any potential activities that may cause a spark. Smoke filtered in from Idaho on Monday and Tuesday, it remained light enough there was no impact to air quality but did reduce visibility a bit across the Front Range. Balloon over Johnstown, Metro Denver was ‘more sophisticated’ weather balloon

By Maddie Rhodes | Fox 31 News An odd-looking balloon is floating across the Denver metro area on Friday morning. While it may look mysterious, the odd shaped white-clear orb in the sky isn’t a mystery – it’s a piece of technology similar to a weather balloon. On Friday morning, FOX31 viewers reported a strange balloon in Johnstown. Around 7:20 a.m., SkyFOX tracked it down in Longmont. Here’s a close-up of the balloon, taken from a FOX31 viewer’s telescope: According to World View Enterprises, a space exploration and technology company, the balloon is one of their Stratollite balloons, which is similar to a weather balloon. June 2024 will go down as the second-warmest June on record in Denver.    It was a hot month with 28 days featuring above average high temperatures, and only two days with highs below average. When you crunch the numbers, the typical high is 83.4 degrees. BY COLORADO SPRINGS GAZETTE On Friday, May 10, a historic showing of the Aurora Borealis gave many Coloradans a glimpse to scenes unlike which they can traditionally view in the nighttime sky. Some of those Coloradans shared what they saw with media, such as the Colorado Springs Gazette. Punxsutawney Phil made his annual appearance on Groundhog Day and predicted that the United States will not see another six weeks of winter. Thousands gathered at Gobbler’s Knob, located in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, early Friday morning to see if the iconic groundhog would see his shadow. This year's ceremony marked the 138th Groundhog Day celebration. Groundhog Day consists of Punxsutawney Phil making a public appearance at Gobbler's Knob, during which it is predicted that a longer winter can be expected if Phil sees his shadow. By Abbey Soukup | The Denver Gazette Denver is forecast for a mix of rain and snow Friday and heading into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. There's a 20% chance of rain after 2 p.m. Expect mostly cloudy skies and a high of 52 degrees. Winds from the northeast will range between 5 and 9 mph in the afternoon. A winter weather advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Sunday for the eastern foothills up to the Continental Divide, with snow accumulations between 4-8 inches. A winter storm watch is in effect from early Saturday to late Saturday night for portions of Douglas and Elbert counties, with snow accumulations between 5-11 inches.
