Yadira Caraveo, Gabe Evans call each other liars, battle over border in dueling ads in Colorado’s 8th CD

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics The gloves came off Friday in the race to represent Colorado's toss-up 8th Congressional District. U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo, the Democratic incumbent, and state Rep. Gabe Evans, her Republican challenger, each released TV ads Friday morning focusing on border security — and by early afternoon, both candidates had accused their opponent of lying. Caraveo, a pediatrician and former state lawmaker, won the newly created seat two years ago by just over 1,600 votes in one of the closest congressional races in the country. This year, the district — stretching from suburbs north of Denver to Greeley in parts of Weld County — is considered Colorado's most competitive contest and could determine which party controls the U.S. House. Libertarian Joss withdraws from 8th District race, endorses Evans in bid to unseat Caraveo

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice In a race which could be decided by a paper-thin margin, 8th District U.S. House Republican nominee Gabe Evans may have just drawn the most valuable endorsement. Eric Joss, the Libertarian Party's nominee for the 8th District, has announced his decision to withdraw and offer his support to Evans. It could be a 2% or better swing in the race. "Leadership means you listen to your constituents and come to a consensus on common things," Joss said. "A few weeks ago we were far apart on some common issues, and now we're a whole lot closer." Evans has signed what was described as Liberty Pledge 2.0, agreeing to support many liberty issues, if elected to Congress. "One of the big sticking points [previously] was we had to agree to abolish the i...

Evans tours southern border near El Paso, criticizes that Caraveo has not

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Gabe Evans, the Republican nominee for the 8th District seat in the U.S. House, visited the southern border near El Paso on Thursday. “The open-border policies of Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Yadira Caraveo have had dire results: more deaths, a record number of individuals on the terrorist watch list crossing into the U.S., and record levels of poisonous fentanyl released into the U.S.," Evans said. "In 2023, U.S. Customs and Border Protection recorded an astonishing 2.5 million border crossings, plus an unknown additional number of got-aways." He reports 375 individuals on the terrorist watch list have been apprehended crossing into the U.S., and 99 have been released into the U.S., as of July. Evans is vying to unseat Democrat Caraveo in...

Colorado rep shares treatment for depression to ‘de-stigmatize mental illness’

By Carie Canterbury | News Nation Rep. Yadira Caraveo (D-Colo.) on Monday opened up about her experience with depression, revealing she is seeking treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and wants to “de-stigmatize” mental illness. Caraveo, in a statement Monday, said she, “like many Americans, struggle with depression,” and the symptoms became “more severe” in recent months. “As a doctor, I always urge my patients to take care of their health first and receive the support that they need,” she said, adding, “I decided to take my own advice and seek treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center.” “I’m sharing this today because I believe we need to de-stigmatize mental illness — in Colorado and across our country. It is my hope that the millions of people who struggl...

‘Have you seen me?’: Republican billboard notes absence of 8th District Democrat Yadira Caraveo from DNC

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics The House Republicans' campaign arm wants people flocking to the Democratic National Convention to know that a handful of vulnerable Democratic incumbents — including U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo — won't be on hand this week in Chicago. Caraveo, a Thornton pediatrician seeking reelection in Colorado's battleground 8th Congressional District, is among five House Democrats targeted with a mobile billboard hired to circle the convention, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee told Colorado Politics. "Have you seen me?" says the electronic billboard, alongside photographs of Vice President Kamala Harris and the five Democrats labeled "Harris enablers" by the NRCC. Evans accepts four debates in 8th District U.S. House race, asks Caraveo to do the same

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Gabe Evans has accepted four debate invitations in Colorado's 8th District race for the U.S. House. The Republican has agreed to appear in debates presented by CBS, 9News, Fox31, and Colorado Politics. “Two years ago, [8th District] voters only got to observe one, 30-minute debate in the race for Congress. Voters deserve better,” Evans said in a statement. “There are tremendous differences between [Democrat] Yadira Caraveo and me on crime, the border, jobs and the cost of living. As candidates for Congress, we owe it to the voters to articulate and explain our positions on these and other important issues." Evans served 12 years in the U.S. Army and Colorado Army National Guard as a Black Hawk helicopter pilot and company commander. He dep...

Democrat Yadira Caraveo hauls in nearly $1.8M for quarter in Colorado’s toss-up 8th CD

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo plans to report raising nearly $1.8 million in the most recent fundraising quarter in a bid to defend Colorado's battleground 8th Congressional District, her campaign told Colorado Politics. The first-term lawmaker heads into the general election with an eye-popping $3.3 million in the bank for a race that could determine which party controls the U.S. House of Representatives once ballots are counted in November. A spokesman for Caraveo's campaign said she raised more than $1,769,000 for the three-month period from April 1 to June 30, including more than $1.2 million in receipts since the pre-primary reporting period ended on June 5. The quarterly figure pushes Caraveo's total fundraising this cycle...

NRCC will invest $2.327 million in 8th District ad buy to support Evans

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice How much ad space will $2.327 million buy in the Denver market? If you reside in or near the 8th District, you are about to find out. The National Republican Congressional Committee, fresh off Gabe Evans 55-point win in the primary election, announced Thursday the reinforcements are coming in an effort to prevent Democrat Yadira Caraveo's re-election. The $2.327 million is third, falling behind NRCC investments of $2.5 million in Los Angeles, Calif., and $6/06 million in Portland, Ore. "In 2023, the NRCC set a goal to expand the House Republican Majority by recruiting top tiercandidates in Democrat-held seats, while at the same time shoring up our most vulnerable members," NRCC Independent Expenditure Director Tom Erickson wrote in a press...

Independents breaking for GOP’s Evans by 6 points in toss-up Colorado House district, polling says

By Cami Mondeaux | Washington Examiner Independent voters in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District are leaning toward a Republican challenger to incumbent Rep. Yadira Caraveo (D-CO), according to a GOP polling memo showing the freshman lawmaker in a vulnerable position in one of the most competitive races of the 2024 cycle.  Despite making history as the first Latina member to represent Colorado in Congress, a majority of voters in the district are either unfamiliar with Caraveo or have no opinion of her, according to the internal survey commissioned by the National Republican Congressional Committee. Roughly 23% of voters report having a favorable view of Caraveo compared to 16% who responded negatively, according to the poll, first shared with the Washin...
