President Donald Trump announced a flurry of new tariffs on Canada set to take effect Wednesday.
Trump posted Tuesday on TruthSocial to announce that he directed the secretary of the Department of Commerce to double the previously announced 25% Canadian tariff on steel and aluminum. The tariffs are expected to go into effect Wednesday, Trump said, as he called on Canada to “drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products.”
“I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area,” Trump wrote, who added that the additional tariffs were also in response to an electricity tax the country imposed on the U.S. “This will allow the U.S. to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada.”
