Colorado Passenger Rail Tax Vote Faces Calls for Removal After Massive Ballot Mistake

DENVER (KDVR) – A major ballot error is affecting hundreds of thousands of voters in four Colorado counties who mistakenly have question 7A printed on their ballots.

7A asks voters if they want to raise taxes to fund the Front Range Passenger Rail project, also known as CoCo.

Only voters inside the Front Range Passenger Rail District are supposed to be asked whether they want to increase taxes to fund the project. The boundary is made up of more than two dozen municipalities, and was approved by state lawmakers this spring.

Instead, every voter in Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas and Weld counties has Issue 7A on their ballot, including about 800,000 voters who aren’t eligible to vote on the issue.

The mistake has prompted a blame game between different election agencies and the passenger rail district, with no one taking legal responsibility for the error.
