Mothers’ non-profit can’t have a bake sale in Golden without permit

By Karen Morfitt | CBS Colorado A group of moms raising money for charity has found themselves in a conflict with the City of Golden. The group raises money in the name of the mothers' daughters who died several years ago. As a nonprofit, they offered baked goods in exchange for donations. They set up outside the Golden Fine Arts Festival every year. This year, they received a notice stating that without the required license, they would be ticketed. The city says the license is required to ensure equity for all the different groups that participate each year. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

Aurora shuts down apartment complex, owners blame Venezuelan gang for building’s condition

By Nico Brambilla and Carol McKinley | Denver Gazette An Aurora landlord is blaming the city’s decision to shut down an apartment complex on a Venezuelan gang — a claim that city officials dismissed, calling it an "alternative narrative" to numerous code violations and the poor condition of the building. The landlord said it could not resume normal operations at the site because of an immediate threat of danger from the gang that staffers and residents face. City officials insisted that Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan prison gang known as TDA, was not responsible for issues that for months have plagued Aspen Grove Apartments at 1568 Nome St. and compelled Aurora to evict dozens of families. In Larimer County, 75 laid off from mental health center amid rise in uninsured and Medicaid reform

By Jennifer Brown | The Colorado Sun Larimer County’s community mental health center has abruptly laid off 75 employees, causing a gap in care for some of the most vulnerable patients and increasing concerns about how far the fallout will spread after a seismic shift in Medicaid funding.  Connor Grogan had 35 clients at SummitStone Health Partners in Fort Collins when he was told at a mandatory meeting last week that he was among those losing their jobs because of a budget crisis. He had to turn in his phone and laptop on the spot, with no opportunity to say goodbye to his patients.  “It was unethical the way that it was handled,” said Grogan, who had counseled children, families and adults at the center for more than two years. “At the very least, I feel like it is not ...

Tina Peters Trial Recap: Elections manager breaks down on stand, defense focuses on inconsistencies in state’s case

By Rocky Mountain Voice Staff Previously elected Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters is facing seven felony charges and several misdemeanors in a trial happening this week.  She is accused of orchestrating a breach to prove election theft. Peters has pleaded not guilty, claiming she is a victim of lawfare. The Colorado Secretary of State's office has refuted her claims summarized in three reports Peters has published, called the “Mesa Reports.”  State prosecutors allege that Peters enlisted software engineer Gerald “Jerry” Wood for IT contract work. Wood passed a background check, received his security badge, and returned it the same day. However, prosecutors claim his badge was used twice in May 2021 to access secure election facilities, capturing images of the election server...

Euthanasia at area animal shelters is up by double digits as thousands of Coloradans surrender their dogs

By Shaun Boyd | CBS Colorado Colorado's animal shelters have reached a tipping point. Dogs that once were adopted within days are now waiting weeks or months and some never make it out. While many shelters have "no-kill" policies, those policies don't apply to dogs that are unhealthy or unsafe. According to the National Canine Advocacy Group, the six largest shelters along the Front Range took in just over 42,000 dogs last year and euthanized nearly 5,000 of them; a 24% increase over 2022. Now, the state's oldest shelter is turning some dogs away. The Dumb Friends League has long billed itself as a "socially conscious shelter," accepting all unwanted animals - but as dog surrenders soar and adoptions fall, Dumb Friends is suspending its open door policy. Fabbricatore: Why I am running for Colorado’s 6th District in Congress

By John Fabbricatore | Commentary I constantly hear how difficult it is for a Republican to win the seat in the 6th Congressional District in Colorado. It's been a tough battle for many years, but this seat was held by Republican leadership since 1983, represented by former Congressmen Daniel Schaefer, Tom Tancredo, and Mike Coffman. The tide turned when Democrats, determined to take this seat, committed significant financial resources to Jason Crow's campaign, spending more than $5 million. At that time, it became one of Colorado's most expensive races, with nearly $23 million being spent by both candidates and outside groups. In 2018, under mounting pressure and increased Democratic funding, the Republican Party withdrew financial support, with the National Republican Congressio...

Van Jones: Conversation needed in Democratic Party over ‘anti-Jewish bigots’ following Walz pick

By Yash Roy | The Hill CNN commentator Van Jones called for conversations about antisemitism in the Democratic party after Vice President Harris announced Tuesday that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) would be her running mate on the November ballot. “You can be for the Palestinians without being an anti-Jewish bigot, but there are some anti-Jewish bigots out there,” Jones said Tuesday on CNN, following the announcement. “And there has to be conversations about how much of what just happened is caving into some of these darker parts in the party. So that’s going to have to get worked out. It’s going to have to get talked through.”  “So here’s the challenge you’ve got in this party, and people don’t want to talk about it,” Jones continued. “We got to talk about ...

Trump, Harris ramp up ground games in battle for swing states

By Susan Ferrechio | The Washington Times The Trump and Harris campaigns are spending millions of dollars on dueling get-out-the-vote efforts in seven swing states that are most likely to determine the November election. The Harris team recently bragged it has built a huge ground-game advantage in the toss-up states, but the Trump campaign denies it. “That is absolutely false,” Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said. Harris campaign aides, most of whom come from the now-defunct reelection campaign for President Biden, said they’ve established far more offices and hired many more staffers than Mr. Trump’s team in the critical battleground states including Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada. In Denver, one member of City Council wants parks & rec workers to transition away from gas equipment

By Alexander Edwards | Denver Gazette Denver Councilmember Sarah Parady requested a second delay on voting for a trio of contracts worth $25.5 million that would pay for upgrades and replacements to Denver Parks and Recreation landscaping, gardening and golf course maintenance equipment. The first-term councilmember previously called the three contracts out last week asking the council to consider alternatives to gas powered landscaping tools. She repeated this request Monday and shared information about how gas powered equipment impacts health and air quality more so than something like a car. Denver, and indeed the metro area as a whole, have experienced many days of air quality alerts. Though driven primarily by fires burning in California, Oregon and locally, Denver regularly ...

In continuing saga, judge lifts order, allowing adversaries possible vote to remove GOP chair; Dueling meetings might exist again

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics A district court judge on Tuesday paved the way for a vote to remove Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dave Williams by lifting a temporary restraining order that blocked a group of Colorado Republicans from holding a meeting to consider whether to fire the party boss. Following an hour-long virtual hearing held earlier the same day, Arapahoe County District Court Judge Thomas W. Henderson reversed an order he issued last month that prohibited Williams' critics from convening a meeting, writing that the court lacked jurisdiction in the internal party dispute. In response to Henderson's new order, the Republicans who have been attempting to oust Williams all summer almost immediately scheduled a meeting on Aug. 24 at a church in Brigh...
