One year after Butler: GAO confirms intel on Trump threat was withheld from security team

By Lindsey McPherson | The Washington Times The Secret Service obtained classified intelligence information about a threat to President Trump 10 days before an attempt on his life at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, but failed to share it with its agents and law enforcement partners in charge of securing the event.  Although the threat was unrelated to the gunman who shot at Mr. Trump in Butler last year, had the intelligence been shared with officials in charge of securing the rally, it would have changed the security posture for the event, the Government Accountability Office found.  Sen. SALT Deduction Scam: Blue States Get the Break, Red States Get the Bill

By Lindsey McPherson | The Washington Times Republicans putting together a sweeping tax and spending package are struggling to resolve an intraparty debate over the amount of state and local taxes taxpayers should be able to deduct from their federal tax liability. The debate over the deduction, known as SALT, is pitting House Republicans from Democrat-majority states against fiscal conservatives. Republicans must find a compromise to pass President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The SALT deduction is claimed by the roughly 10% of taxpayers who itemize. The 90% who claim the standard deduction do not benefit from the deduction. Taxpayers can currently deduct up to $10,000 of state and local taxes from their federal taxable income. As more Americans warm to Trump, voters shifting to GOP, away from Dems, Pew survey says

By Stephen Dinan | The Washington Times Americans are warmer to President-elect Donald Trump now than they were in 2016 and 2020, according to a new poll that found they believe he’ll steer the economy correctly as he takes office. The Pew Research Center polled nearly 10,000 people after the election and said most expect him to make good decisions about the economy, crime issues, immigration and foreign policy, though they’re less enthused about his ability to unify the country. Some 43% said they have a warm feeling toward Mr. Trump, which while less than a majority is still better than 2016, when 36% felt that way toward him, and 2020, when that was just 34%. By  Stephen Dinan | Washington Times The Department of Homeland Security greenlighted refugee applications for Venezuelan gang members after immigration officers failed to spot their gang tattoos, The Washington Times has learned. Kevin Grigsby, head of refugee operations at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said several members of the vicious Tren de Aragua gang were approved and made it to the U.S. border before a different agency spotted the tattoos and blocked them from entering. Experts said tattoos are a standard indicator of gang membership and expressed shock that USCIS was missing those red flags. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression said the Capitol has dropped its policy forbidding politically themed apparel in the House and Senate galleries after pushback from a local radio host who was kicked out for wearing a “Pro-Life U” pullover. “Faced with a potential 1st Amendment lawsuit, leaders of the Colorado House and Senate agreed to rescind the Capitol galleries’ unconstitutional ban on pins and apparel ‘expressing political statements,’ ” said the foundation in a Wednesday statement. Growing government debt is bigger threat to economy than climate change, CBO says

By Stephen Dinan | The Washington Times The rapidly rising federal debt will do substantially more damage to the U.S. economy in coming years than climate change, the Congressional Budget Office said, putting stark figures on the size of the danger. The CBO said Friday that if Uncle Sam’s debt grows as it projects, it would reduce the size of the economy by 3.2% in 30 years. Climate change would sap it of 1%, as measured by gross domestic product. The CBO released the data in response to a question from Sen. Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee.
