Aurora City Council votes to crack down on vehicle registration with impoundments

By Tori Mason | CBS Colorado In a move to enhance safety and enforce vehicle regulations, the Aurora City Council approved an ordinance for impoundment penalties. The measure, which passed with a 6-2 vote, mandates the impoundment of vehicles if a police officer determines the vehicle is being operated by an unlicensed driver, is not properly registered, and lacks insurance.  In July, the Aurora Police Department told CBS Colorado that when a vehicle is pulled over for not having a plate, the driver usually gets a ticket to appear in court. Thick wildfire smoke from fires surrounding state will arrive in Colorado by today

No fires are currently burning across Colorado, but hundreds of fires are actively burning as seen on the Watch Duty map. Critical fire weather will make a return tomorrow, so please avoid any potential activities that may cause a spark. Smoke filtered in from Idaho on Monday and Tuesday, it remained light enough there was no impact to air quality but did reduce visibility a bit across the Front Range. By Morgan Whitley, Lanie Lee Cook | Fox 31 News A school district in Colorado’s high country canceled class on Wednesday due to “school safety concerns,” later announcing that the district would cancel class for the rest of the school week. Just after midnight on Wednesday, the Lake County School District that serves Leadville, Twin Lakes and surrounding areas sent a letter to families that school would not be held. The district said the cancellation comes on the advice and collaboration with Sheriff Heath Speckman after school safety concerns emerged midday Tuesday and lasted through the night and early morning Wednesday. Suspect arrested on suspected arson in 10,000-acre Alexander Mountain fire

By Jennifer McRae | CBS Colorado A suspect has been arrested in connection with the Alexander Mountain Fire that burned almost 10,000 acres in Northern Colorado earlier this year. The wildfire ignited on July 29 and destroyed 28 homes and 21 other structures. Larimer County Sheriff John Feyen said the suspect has been identified as Jason Hobby, 49, a Loveland resident and former employee of Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch.  Hobby was an employee of the ranch until about three or four weeks ago when he was identified as a suspect in the fire.  SEE THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

By Marianne Goodland | Colorado Politics The hopes for clean drinking water for more than 50,000 families in the Arkansas Valley in southeastern Colorado could take one more significant step forward with the introduction of legislation this week to finalize payment arrangements for the Arkansas Valley Conduit. The conduit is a 130-mile pipeline that starts at Pueblo Reservoir and goes to Lamar, just shy of the Colorado-Kansas border. According to Bill Long of the Southeastern Colorado Water Conservation District, it is intended to provide clean drinking water to the residents of the Arkansas Valley. By Denver Gazette Aurora officials on Wednesday admitted they had been arresting people suspected — though not yet confirmed at the time of their apprehensions — of being members of a Venezuelan gang operating in the metro Denver long before the media spotlight on the city. The gang's activities also "significantly affected" apartment complexes in the city, officials acknowledged. On Aug. 28, Don Gittleson of Jackson County and Conway Farrell of Grand County and their families wrote to regional officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, asking them to take control over decision-making regarding program to reintroduce wolves in Colorado. While Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages Colorado's wolves, under the wolf restoration plan and the 10(j) rule issued by U.S. Fish & Wildlife, the federal agency still maintains primary oversight.
