Colorado officials thought they had 3 more years to spend $1.5B in federal COVID aid. They have 11 months.

By Brian Eason | SOURCE: THE COLORADO SUN Colorado state budget writers are in a race against the clock to spend $1.5 billion in leftover federal pandemic aid before the end of 2024 thanks to new guidance from the U.S. Treasury Department. The deadline is two full years sooner than state lawmakers and Polis administration officials had expected. That has set off a mad scramble to rewrite the budget for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30, to allow the state to spend federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars faster than lawmakers intended. The time crunch arose from shifting guidance from federal officials on how they define “obligated,” a term that doesn’t exist in state law. Federal law has long required ARPA recipients to “obligate” all of their funding by th...

Nancy Mace endorses Trump in slight to Nikki Haley

By Julia Johnson, Washington Examiner | SOURCE: THE GAZETTE Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) endorsed former President Donald Trump on Monday, another snub to former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley from a Republican ally in her home state. "Today, I’m endorsing Donald J. Trump for president," Mace said in a statement. "I don’t see eye to eye perfectly with any candidate. And until now, I’ve stayed out of it. But the time has come to unite behind our nominee." Trump endorsed Mace's primary challenger in 2022, while Haley offered her own endorsement to the South Carolina Republican, who won reelection. Mace has offered criticism of Trump in the past, drawing his ire. But in the last year, she appeared to show flashes of sympathy and support f...

On a dead-end street in north Denver, migrants are surviving winter with the help of an army of volunteers

By Jennifer Brown | SOURCE: THE COLORADO SUN Footprints in the snow lead from the sidewalk to a path through the weeds, opening to a field that is almost invisible from the road.  North of Interstate 70, in a part of Denver filled mostly with warehouses and gas stations, the tents are flapping relentlessly in the wind. About 10 migrants from South America hunkered down here during four days of subzero temperatures, and the volunteers who brought them heaters and propane, hot meals and fresh water, are prepared to help hundreds more as Denver pushes migrants out of their city-provided hotel rooms in the coming weeks.  The dozen or so brightly colored tents were mostly concealed from view by the field’s dirt mounds, despite that they were just across the South Platte River from...

How Colorado voters are reacting to Lauren Boebert’s congressional district swap

By Jesse Bedayn, The Associated Press/Report for America | SOURCE: THE COLORADO SUN LAST CHANCE — Fleeing a tough reelection bid in the district where she lives, Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert is moving from the mountains to the plains, in the hopes of finding conservative pastures green enough to salvage her place in Congress. To win, she’ll have to convince a new swath of voters that her brand of white-hot, far-right political activism — built on divisive one-liners and partisan ferocity in the U.S. House — is more needed in Washington than the home-grown Republicans she now faces in the primary. While Boebert’s new district voted for President Donald Trump by a nearly 20 percentage point margin in 2020, more than double the margin in her old district, and some Republic...

Biden-Cheney: You read it here first | SONDERMANN

By Eric Sondermann | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS Desperate times call for desperate measures. For Democrats, a party I left more than a quarter-century ago in favor of unaffiliated status and independent mind, their current situation would seem to qualify. Arguably, the same would apply for a broader swath of Americans if we are to take seriously concerns as to what a second Trump presidency could bring. To the partisan lens first, Democrats need not be in a full-blown panic. But what is the alarm bell just one step shy of that? Here in late January, Democrats find themselves with a hollowed-out, underwhelming incumbent with approval ratings deeply underwater. On top of that, the issue set for huge numbers of voters works against them. READ FULL ARTICLE ON COLORADOPOLITICS....

Colorado’s Attorney General Grants $3.9M for Opioid Abuse Treatment in Prisons

SOURCE: THELOBBY-CO.COM Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has recently come under fire for allocating a staggering $3.94 million grant to the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) for the treatment of opioid addiction. Critics argue that these funds should have been prioritized for law enforcement to prevent the distribution, sale, and use of opioids first. The two-year agreement between the Colorado Department of Law and the CDOC will focus on delivering medications for “opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment,” behavioral health counseling, and care coordination for inmates in state correctional facilities. According to Weiser, "Two-thirds of today's incarcerated population, on a nationwide basis, struggles with a substance use disorder, and that percentage is even higher in...

HAMAS Protesters Gather Outside El Paso County Democratic Party Offices for Theatrical Stunt

SOURCE: THELOBBY-CO.COM A group of Colorado pro HAMAS terrorists gathered outside the El Paso County Democratic Party office on January 19th, staging a theatrical stunt. The ‘protesters’ stacked bundles of cloth made to look like body bags outside the door, claiming that each bag represented 3,000 lives lost in Gaza. This disturbing act was organized by the Colorado Springs People's Coalition (CSPC), a group that is unhappy with President Joe Biden's handling of the situation in Palestine – a war that began with the October 7th early morning sneak attack on the civilian population of Israel. Colorado Springs People's Coalition (CSPC) list of demands posted on Facebook. The CSPC's statement, released on the same day as the protest, revealed their misguided intentions. They a...
