Biden attends dignified transfer of soldiers killed in Jordan drone attack

While talking with families of fallen soldiers, Biden reportedly repeated false story his son, Beau, was killed in action in Iraq By Haisten Willis | Colorado Springs Gazette President Joe Biden participated Friday in the dignified transfer of three U.S. service members who were killed last weekend in Jordan. During a ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, the bodies of the Army reserve soldiers, Sgt. William Rivers, Sgt. Breonna Moffett, and Sgt. Kennedy Sanders, each in a flag-draped transfer case, were removed in turn by teams of six carriers wearing camouflage uniforms and white gloves. They were carried from the cargo bay of a massive gray C-5 transport plane into a van. The three soldiers, all from Georgia, were killed last weekend in a drone a...

Trump’s Steele dossier complaint dismissed by London high court

By Misty Severi | The Gazette A London judge dismissed former President Donald Trump’s privacy lawsuit against former British spy Christopher Steele on Thursday, where Trump accused Steele of making “false and scandalous claims” in a dossier. British Judge Karen Steyn said there were "no compelling reasons" to let the lawsuit go to trial and that Trump had allowed many years to pass without legal action to “vindicate his reputation in this jurisdiction” since he was made aware of the dossier’s existence in January of 2017. The lawsuit, which was filed against Steele and his consultancy company Orbis Business Intelligence in October, focused on a 35-page dossier that included unverified allegations about Trump and the 2016 presidential election. Don’t expect re-run of 2016 to stop Trump’s nomination, RNC party leaders say

By Rachel Schilke | Colorado Springs Gazette Republican Party leaders will not allow history to repeat of a showdown at the Republican National Convention to prevent former President Donald Trump from becoming the party's nominee. The party experienced a last-ditch effort from a group of delegates in 2016 trying to prevent Trump from being selected for the Republican presidential nomination. However, party members are not expecting any outbursts from delegates at this year's convention, held July 15-18. “It didn’t happen then, and it’s not going to happen now,” David Bossie, a Trump ally and RNC member from Maryland, told NBC News. “There is no one who is going to attempt to do that. ... There’s none of that conversation that has happen...

Biden: jobs report ‘proof’ economy ‘strongest in the world’

By Haisten Willis | Denver Gazette President Joe Biden called the United States economy the "strongest in the world' as the January jobs report showed the country adding 353,000 jobs last month. "Today, we saw more proof [of the economy's strength], with another month of strong wage gains and employment gains of over 350,000 in January, continuing the strong growth from last year," Biden said. "Our economy has created 14.8 million jobs since I took office, unemployment has been under 4% for two full years now, and inflation has been at the pre-pandemic level of 2% over the last half year." The economy beat expectations in January and added 353,000 jobs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday morning, showing that the labor ...

If Punxsutawney Phil is correct, goodbye snow and cold

By Asher Notheis | Colorado Springs Gazette Get ready for warmer weather! Punxsutawney Phil made his annual appearance on Groundhog Day and predicted that the United States will not see another six weeks of winter. Thousands gathered at Gobbler’s Knob, located in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, early Friday morning to see if the iconic groundhog would see his shadow. This year's ceremony marked the 138th Groundhog Day celebration. Groundhog Day consists of Punxsutawney Phil making a public appearance at Gobbler's Knob, during which it is predicted that a longer winter can be expected if Phil sees his shadow. Traditionally, Phil will not see his shadow if the weather is cloudy, thus blocking the sun and preventing shadows being created from it. The hist...

In bipartisan effort, House passes bill to deport illegal immigrants who receive DUIs

By Peyton Sorosinski | GAZETTE.COM The House approved a Republican-proposed bill Thursday with support from 59 Democrats that would indefinitely deport undocumented immigrants who are charged with driving under the influence in the United States. "In the United States, someone dies in a crash with an impaired driver every 45 minutes. I lost two of my young newlywed constituents to an illegal immigrant driving under the influence of alcohol," Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL), who brought forth the legislation, told Fox News. While it was primarily Republicans in favor of the measure, the final tally of votes was 274-150. All Alabama House Republicans voted in support of the bill, and the state's lone Democratic Rep. Terri Sewell opposed it, 1819 News&...

The officials presented a united front against El Paso becoming a sanctuary county, admonishing state and federal government for lack of action in stemming illegal immigration.  "Allow me to state unequivocally that we will not be designated as a sanctuary county. All five El Paso County commissioners are united in our position," said board chair Cami Bremer.  Bremer and vice chair commissioner Carrie Geitner led the conference, coming out strong against the harboring of migrants in El Paso County. Investor Griffin gave $5 million to pro-Haley group in January -source

By Svea Herbst-Bayliss and Alexandra Ulmer (Reuters) - Hedge fund billionaire Kenneth Griffin gave $5 million to an outside group supporting Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley this month, a person familiar with the donation said on Tuesday. The support from Griffin, a Republican mega donor, may help Haley assuage concerns of running out of money after she lost the first two Republican nominating contests to runaway frontrunner Donald Trump and faces a steep path to clinching the party's presidential nomination ahead of the November election. However, it remains unclear when in January Griffin made the donations, a potentially important fact given Haley lost the Iowa and New Hampshire contests, on Jan. 15 and Jan. 23, respectively. By Breeanna Jent [email protected] Brandy Williams has her eyes on El Paso County's future, and she sees fireworks. Williams is running as a Republican in the crowded race to replace outgoing Stan VanderWerf on the Board of El Paso County Commissioners in District 3, promising to prioritize public safety, infrastructure and lower taxes. The county has seen rapid widespread population and economic growth over the last decade, said Williams, 45. Likening its expansion to a mountain climbed, the lifelong resident and former Colorado Springs councilwoman said the county's next step should be continuing that push.
