New rules take effect July 1 for Colorado gun owners seeking concealed carry permits

By Heather Willard | Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — A law changing the requirements for concealed firearm carry permits will go into effect on July 1, and gun owners should be aware of what is changing. In just under a month, anyone who wants to renew or apply for a concealed weapons permit must complete further steps, due to HB-24-1174. The new law drew criticism from gun rights groups, which said the law could deter gun owners who would otherwise carry their firearms. If you’re renewing your concealed carry permit, the law requires that the applicant “demonstrate competence with a handgun,” which can be done through participating in organized shooting competitions, current military service, or current certifications as a peace officer. Vote of no confidence for JeffCo Superintendent Dorland follows union letter calling it necessary

(KDVR) — Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Tracy Dorland was given a vote of no confidence by a teachers’ union during a meeting Thursday night. Dorland has been in the position since April 2021, but last night the Jefferson County Public Schools teachers’ union said they’re not pleased with the overall direction the district is going. In a letter to the district board of directors on their website, the Jefferson County Education Association Representative Council and Operational Board said the vote of confidence was a necessary step. Fox31 via The Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — A dual U.S. and German citizen originally from Colorado has been arrested on charges that he traveled to Israel and attempted to firebomb the branch office of the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, officials said Sunday. Federal prosecutors in New York said the man, Joseph Neumeyer, walked up to the embassy building on May 19 with a backpack containing Molotov cocktails but got into a confrontation with a guard and eventually ran away, dropping his backpack as the guard tried to grab him. Law enforcement then tracked Neumeyer down to a hotel a few blocks away from the embassy and arrested him, according to a criminal complaint filed in the Eastern District of New York. Colorado gets 210 year sentence for sexual abuse of boys at Haiti orphanage

By Brooke Williams | Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — A Colorado man received a sentence of 210 years in prison for sexually abusing numerous children in care at the orphanage he founded and directed in Haiti, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday. The man, identified as 73-year-old Michael Karl Geilenfeld, most recently lived in Littleton. He founded St. Joseph’s Home for Boys in Haiti in 1985. The DOJ said in a press release that he repeatedly traveled from the U.S. to Haiti and “sexually abused the boys entrusted to his care” during his more than two decades operating the orphanage. By Heather Willard | Fox31 DENVER (KDVR) — The co-owners of a Denver-based firearms business have been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to one count each of conspiracy to defraud the U.S., and after one of the co-owners also pleaded guilty to possession of an unregistered firearm. Campbell Slayden, 26, a co-owner of Modern Arms and Optics LLC, was sentenced to 50 months in prison and pleaded guilty to two counts: conspiracy to defraud and possession of an unregistered firearm. Anthony Gallegos, 26, also a co-owner of the company, was sentenced to 36 months for conspiracy to defraud. While some counties have siren systems in place, others rely on alert systems. Tornadoes touchdown in NE Colorado, egg-sized hail reported

By Heather Willard | KDVR DENVER (KDVR) — Severe weather, including multiple tornadoes, was experienced in Colorado on Sunday, as hail, high winds and some rain swept the region. Officials confirmed tornadoes touched down near Bennett and Parker, with Adams County officials reporting at least 10 homes or buildings damaged or lost to the storm, and the Elizabeth Fire Protection District reporting 19 homes with minor to severe damage in its area. The weather comes on the heels of deadly severe weather across much of the Midwest, with The Associated Press reporting that at least 27 people were killed during the aggressive storms, including 18 people in Kentucky.
