Aurora wants in-person property management at apartments, or threatens a shutdown

By Lanie Lee Cook | Fox 31 News Aurora has threatened to shut down two troubled apartment complexes unless their owners take responsibility for deteriorating conditions and install an in-person presence on the properties. The complexes at issue are The Edge at Lowry, located at East 12th Avenue and Dallas Street, and Whispering Pines, at East 13th Avenue and Helena Street. CBZ Management operates both complexes, which have suffered a severe lack of maintenance along with concerns about the presence of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. On Thursday, Aurora City Manager Jason Batchelor offered two police officers at each property for two weeks and possibly longer, but only if the owner installs an on-site property manager at each location. That’s according to Aurora Mayor Mike Coff...

Balloon over Johnstown, Metro Denver was ‘more sophisticated’ weather balloon

By Maddie Rhodes | Fox 31 News An odd-looking balloon is floating across the Denver metro area on Friday morning. While it may look mysterious, the odd shaped white-clear orb in the sky isn’t a mystery – it’s a piece of technology similar to a weather balloon. On Friday morning, FOX31 viewers reported a strange balloon in Johnstown. Around 7:20 a.m., SkyFOX tracked it down in Longmont. Here’s a close-up of the balloon, taken from a FOX31 viewer’s telescope: According to World View Enterprises, a space exploration and technology company, the balloon is one of their Stratollite balloons, which is similar to a weather balloon. However, Phil Wocken with World View said weather balloons pop at high altitudes. READ THE FULL STORY AT FOX 31 NEWS

Gov. Polis signs property tax deal into law as measures removed from ballot

By Gabrielle Franklin | Fox 31 News The governor on Wednesday officially signed into law the property tax agreement designed to keep two initiatives off this year’s Colorado ballot. Now that the deal is done, FOX31 is taking a closer look at the impact it could have on your wallet. Property owners should still expect high property taxes this year, but state leaders say the increase will be lower than if the compromise had not been passed and if ballot initiatives 50 and 108 failed. If 50 and 108 passed without lawmakers reconvening for a special session, there could have been devastating impacts on funding for local services. Lawmakers celebrated the end of what they called property tax wars with groups that often bring property tax measures, but some concerns around the effects s...

Why aren’t I-70 mountain express toll lanes always accessible? Here’s the answer

By Greg Nieto | Fox 31 News After another busy weekend on Interstate 70 in the Colorado high country, some drivers are once again asking why the mountain express lanes are not always accessible. The 13-mile stretch of I-70 goes from Idaho Springs to U.S. 40. Tim Hoover, the Colorado Department of Transportation’s deputy director of communications, policy and programs, said by federal agreement, the lanes can only be open so many days and hours a year, adding: READ THE FULL STORY AT FOX 31 NEWS

Outcome of Saturday meeting showed equal support for Williams as Brighton opposition days earlier

By Heather Willard | Fox 31 News  Colorado Republican party infighting continued throughout Labor Day weekend with a contingent of the party’s central committee meeting Saturday in Castle Rock and voting to retain Dave Williams as chairman. The meeting comes exactly a week after another group of Colorado Republicans gathered in Brighton to vote Williams out of his position — 77 party members gathered for the meeting, alongside 104 proxies. Party members moved to oust Williams after he sent an email from the state party stating that “God hates flags,” and then posting to X that Americans should “Burn all the #pride flags this June.” Both sides appear to be boycotting the other’s meetings, and Williams touted in a Colorado GOP email that 191.5 votes wer...

‘We will hunt them down, we will find them, we will arrest them and we’ll deport them’

By Alliyah Sims | Fox 31 News As more and more videos begin to surface showing alleged gang violence at Aurora apartment complexes, it’s putting people across the Denver metro area on high alert. FOX31 spoke to Denver Mayor Mike Johnston about how city leaders are ready to address those issues. Johnston said the Denver Police Department has already been working with federal, state and other local agencies because they have been made aware of the problem early on. He said while there has been no evidence of Denver apartments being “taken over” by a Venezuelan gang, they are providing a heavier police presence in areas that have risks. Special session on property taxes has ended. What did legislators pass?

By Heather Willard | Fox 31 News The Colorado Legislature’s 2024 special session ended Thursday after a whirlwind four days, with lawmakers approving a bipartisan bill to reduce the assessment rate for residential properties. The bill passed the Colorado House on Wednesday, but not without some pushback. The measure had been serving as negotiations between state lawmakers and supporters of the statewide ballot initiatives 50 and 108. The pre-negotiated measure was designed to slow property tax increases. The measure passed with a vote of 45-18 in the House, with 15 Democrats and three Republicans voting no. Two representatives were excused. READ THE FULL STORY AT FOX 31 NEWS

Pine Canyon development will ’cause true impacts’, Castle Rock asks residents to weigh in

By Heather Willard | Fox 31 News The town of Castle Rock is opposing a new development that’s been proposed and the town is encouraging residents to weigh in on the plan. The Pine Canyon project is an urban-level development “in the heart of Castle Rock,” which would take over 530 acres of unincorporated Douglas County and add over 4,500 residents to the area. The acreage is nestled between The Woodlands neighborhood, Metzler Ranch and Red Hawk. According to Castle Rock, the area is “completely surrounded” by the town. “It is not possible to develop this property without causing true impacts to the Town of Castle Rock’s community and infrastructure,” Castle Rock’s Director of Development Tara Vargish and senior planner Sandy Vossler said in a letter to Douglas County’s c...
