Canada, Mexico to face 25% tariffs, China 10% until borders are secure, drug importation stops, Trump says

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice President-elect Donald Trump has put Canada and Mexico on notice -- close their borders with the United States or face the penalty of tariffs on all imports into the United States. Crime and drugs "at levels never seen before" are pouring through porous borders to the north and south of the United States, Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Monday. As one of his "many first Executive Orders," Trump pledged to charge Canada and Mexico 25% tariffs. "This tariff will remain in effect until such time as drugs, in particular fentanyl, and all illegal aliens stop this invasion of our country!," Trump wrote. "Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem." Until they do, Trump wrote, "it is...

By Asher Notheis | Washington Examiner Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) warned that Denver Mayor Mike Johnston could face legal repercussions over his opposition to President-elect Donald Trump‘s proposed mass deportations of illegal immigrants. Johnston is one of several mayors who have stated they will not assist the incoming Trump administration with its deportation plan, stating that Denver would “continue to be a welcoming, open, big-hearted city.” Paul, who has expressed criticism of Trump’s plan to use the Army to carry out his deportation plan, warned the mayor that his resistance could be taken to the Supreme Court, where he could potentially be removed from office. “I don’t know whether or not there would be a criminal prosecution for someone resisting federal l...

Ballot measure outcomes reflect national trend of even Blue states embracing tougher approach to crime

By Amanda Hernández | Louisiana Illuminator The outcomes of seven ballot measures in Arizona, California and Colorado reflect the stricter approach to crime that’s been seen across much of the country recently, with voters and policymakers driven by concerns over rising retail theft, homelessness, fentanyl misuse and challenges in police recruitment and retention. Voters have decided in recent years that they prefer to adopt progressive changes to the criminal justice system “somewhat less aggressively,” said Dan Schnur, a former Republican strategist and a political communications professor at the University of Southern California and the University of California, Berkeley. “Voters are always course correctors. They’re always adjusting and readjusting, trying to calibrate policy ...
