Swearer: Why the 2nd Amendment is more crucial than ever after attempt to kill Trump

By Amy Swearer | The Daily Signal A 20-year-old man with a rifle, perched atop a nearby roof, fired several rounds July 13 at Donald Trump as the former president spoke at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing one attendee and wounding at least two others. As we know now, one round nicked Trump’s right ear and he avoided a serious wound or death with a fortuitous head turn that moved him out of the bullet’s path at the last second. Almost immediately, some gun control activists saw the attempted assassination as an opportunity to call for their wish list of more restrictions on the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Talk about missing the point. READ THE FULL STORY AT THE DAILY SIGNAL Editor's note: Opinions expressed...

COVID set back 8th graders an entire school year compared with pre-pandemic peers, study finds

By Erica Meltzer | Chalkbeat Colorado COVID disruptions continue to cast a long shadow over student learning, with middle school students in particular suffering the cumulative effects of years of missed lessons, new research shows. The analysis from the testing group NWEA released Tuesday estimates that eighth graders would need an additional nine months of schooling — an entire school year, essentially — to do as well as their counterparts before the pandemic. Third graders, meanwhile, would need a little more than two months of extra schooling to match their counterparts, according to results from the group’s MAP Growth tests that it administers several times a year. Across grades and subjects, students continue to perform worse on these tests than similar students did bef...

Secret Service Director Cheatle resigns in connection with Trump rally shooting

By Maria Sacchetti and Carol D. Leonnig | The Washington Post U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned Tuesday in connection with the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, according to a copy of a letter sent to agency staff obtained by The Washington Post. “As your Director, I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” Cheatle wrote. “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that, I have made the difficult decision to step down as your Director.” The attack was the first against a U.S. leader on the elite protective agency’s watch in more than 40 years. Cheatle, a veteran Secret Service agent, had called the security failure involving a gunman shooting from an apparently unsecured roof at a Trump presidential campa...

Jeff Crank: Biden should ‘resign immediately’ or the cabinet should ‘invoke the 25th Amendment’

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Jeff Crank, the Republican nominee for Colorado's 5th District seat in Congress, has called for President Joe Biden to resign or be removed from office. "Despite an all-out effort to hide Joe Biden's failing health, Democrats turned on him when they saw they could lose power," Crank wrote Sunday on Twitter/X following Biden's announcement he would suspend his campaign for re-election, but finish out his first term in office. Mr. Biden has endorsed Kamala Harris for the Democratic Party's nomination, although some key and powerful players in the party have not. "The President admits he can't run for re-election, but somehow thinks he can run the government," Crank wrote on Twitter/X. "The President must resign immediately, or the cabinet mu...

‘Economic hardship’ bonus of only $20 per month? That’s what military troops are getting

By JAKE SMITH | The Daily Caller The Biden administration’s Pentagon will start giving U.S. troops “economic hardship bonuses,” but the payout is unlikely to make any substantial difference in their salaries, according to Military.com. Troops in the E1 through E3 rank — considered junior enlisted troops — will receive an additional $20 per month as a result of the new bonus, a senior defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Military.com on Friday. Junior enlisted troops have been among those hit the hardest in the military by financial hardships in recent years, with low pay compared to the private sector and high inflation and cost rates.  READ THE FULL STORY AT THE DAILY CALLER

Joe Biden is out of the race. Here’s what happens to his $96 million campaign fund

By Ross Kohan and Daniel Kuhn | The Street There’s a $96 million question hanging in the air…what happens to the bundle President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign has yet to spend, now that he’s out of the race? Since Vice President Kamala Harris was already on the ticket, she has access to that money. In addition, her campaign already raised more than $50 million in the hours immediately after President Biden backed her to take his place in the race. But Harris doesn’t automatically replace her boss, which means another contender could step in to challenge Harris. If they do, they won’t have access to any of that cash, which essentially means they’ll be starting from zero. There are some exceptions of course, if a member of the Senate or the House takes over for Biden, leftover m...

Trump promised to end ‘inflation nightmare’ in RNC speech. Here’s his plan.

By Megan Henney | Fox Business Former President Donald Trump vowed to end the ongoing inflation crisis during his keynote speech at the Republican National Convention, promising that he would work to bring high prices down if he wins the November election. "We’ve had the worst inflation we’ve ever had under this person," Trump said in the Thursday night speech, referring to President Biden. "Inflation has been a killer for our country. No matter what you’re making, it doesn’t matter because inflation is eating you alive." The Republican nominee laid out several proposals that he said would reduce inflation or provide relief from steep prices, including eliminating taxes on tips, raising tariffs on other countries and drilling for more oil in the U.S. Although inflatio...

Biden ends bid for second term in White House as he drops out of his 2024 rematch with Trump

By Paul Steinhauser , Brooke Singman | Fox News President Joe Biden announced Sunday that he will suspend his 2024 re-election campaign amid mounting pressure from his Democratic colleagues on Capitol Hill, top donors and Hollywood stars after a disastrous debate performance last month. The unprecedented announcement came as an increasing number of Democrat lawmakers had begun to publicly call for Biden to step aside and the party's leadership reportedly was engaged in efforts to convince Biden, 81, he could not win in November's general election against former President Trump, the 2024 GOP nominee who Biden defeated four years ago to win the White House. "It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president," Biden wrote in a public letter. "While it has been my i...

Dennis Quaid: Ronald Reagan’s story ‘exemplified’ what nation ‘needs to get back to’ in Aug. 30 movie release

By Kristen Altus | Fox Business Dennis Quaid is drawing parallels between the late 70s and the Reagan presidency to today, reliving the great relationship of two political rivals who worked together to make this country a better place for the American people. "They exemplified the way we would like to get this nation back to, as far as the unity and working it out with one another," Quaid said from the Republican National Convention Thursday night on "The Bottom Line." The beloved "Parent Trap" actor sat alongside his "Reagan" co-star Dan Lauria, as the two discussed what they learned from the 40th president and his friendship with Tip O’Neill, a Massachusetts Democrat who served as House speaker at the time. Some who want Biden out are after Harris too, AOC says in video rant

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice In an hour-long, self-described "rip the band-aid off" moment on Instagram, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reports that even if certain top Democrats get President Joe Biden to withdraw his election bid, they won't be satisfied. They want Vice President Kamala Harris out too, she said, indicating Democrats are saying one thing in public and another in private. "I feel like there have been a lot of smokescreens and people have not been given the whole story," Ocasio-Cortez said. "I don't have a crystal ball and don't know what all is going on." She added: "That debate sucked. It sucked for everybody. It was just like not great." Ocasio-Cortez indicates influential Democrats are seeking more than just Biden's removal. “A lot of the...
