In run for state board of education, Yazmin Navarro calls for more voter interaction, education and assistance

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice As the wife of a U.S. Marine and a mother, Yazmin Navarro experienced education models in America and abroad. Those varied experiences as a student and parent, working with at-risk youth and an upbringing with "education at forefront for success" are among the reasons Navarro chose to seek election in Colorado's 8th District to the state board of education. Navarro, the Republican nominee, is being opposed on the general election ballot by Democrat Rhonda Solis. The campaign trail has led Navarro to draw some conclusions which she shared Monday, Sept. 23, on a grassroots call headed by former Sen. Kevin Lundberg. "I'm seeing [Democrats] out there registering voters," Navarro said. "Why can't Republicans do more of that? I want to see us ou...

Yadira Caraveo, Gabe Evans call each other liars, battle over border in dueling ads in Colorado’s 8th CD

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics The gloves came off Friday in the race to represent Colorado's toss-up 8th Congressional District. U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo, the Democratic incumbent, and state Rep. Gabe Evans, her Republican challenger, each released TV ads Friday morning focusing on border security — and by early afternoon, both candidates had accused their opponent of lying. Caraveo, a pediatrician and former state lawmaker, won the newly created seat two years ago by just over 1,600 votes in one of the closest congressional races in the country. This year, the district — stretching from suburbs north of Denver to Greeley in parts of Weld County — is considered Colorado's most competitive contest and could determine which party controls the U.S. House. Evans tours southern border near El Paso, criticizes that Caraveo has not

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Gabe Evans, the Republican nominee for the 8th District seat in the U.S. House, visited the southern border near El Paso on Thursday. “The open-border policies of Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Yadira Caraveo have had dire results: more deaths, a record number of individuals on the terrorist watch list crossing into the U.S., and record levels of poisonous fentanyl released into the U.S.," Evans said. "In 2023, U.S. Customs and Border Protection recorded an astonishing 2.5 million border crossings, plus an unknown additional number of got-aways." He reports 375 individuals on the terrorist watch list have been apprehended crossing into the U.S., and 99 have been released into the U.S., as of July. Evans is vying to unseat Democrat Caraveo in...

Democrat Yadira Caraveo hauls in nearly $1.8M for quarter in Colorado’s toss-up 8th CD

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo plans to report raising nearly $1.8 million in the most recent fundraising quarter in a bid to defend Colorado's battleground 8th Congressional District, her campaign told Colorado Politics. The first-term lawmaker heads into the general election with an eye-popping $3.3 million in the bank for a race that could determine which party controls the U.S. House of Representatives once ballots are counted in November. A spokesman for Caraveo's campaign said she raised more than $1,769,000 for the three-month period from April 1 to June 30, including more than $1.2 million in receipts since the pre-primary reporting period ended on June 5. The quarterly figure pushes Caraveo's total fundraising this cycle...

Evans to Weld Women: ‘We can win the 8th District and retire Caraveo’

By Brian Porter | Rocky Mountain Voice HUDSON -- Gabe Evans isn't resting on a 55-point Republican Party primary election victory. The 8th District Republican nominee for U.S. representative told the Women of Weld County here Thursday he can defeat Yadira Caraveo on the issues, each and every one of them. "Open borders, American oil and gas production, agriculture, really every pressing issue right now, she has been on the wrong side of it," Evans said. "It is time to retire her." His Christmas in June began when 8th District Republicans handed him a 55.1% margin of victory over Janak Joshi on Tuesday. On Thursday, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) announced it would invest $2.327 million in Colorado's 8th District race, marking its third-highest investment...

NRCC will invest $2.327 million in 8th District ad buy to support Evans

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice How much ad space will $2.327 million buy in the Denver market? If you reside in or near the 8th District, you are about to find out. The National Republican Congressional Committee, fresh off Gabe Evans 55-point win in the primary election, announced Thursday the reinforcements are coming in an effort to prevent Democrat Yadira Caraveo's re-election. The $2.327 million is third, falling behind NRCC investments of $2.5 million in Los Angeles, Calif., and $6/06 million in Portland, Ore. "In 2023, the NRCC set a goal to expand the House Republican Majority by recruiting top tiercandidates in Democrat-held seats, while at the same time shoring up our most vulnerable members," NRCC Independent Expenditure Director Tom Erickson wrote in a press...

Evans, Flora win Republican Rumble straw poll; LP chair second to Lopez in special election poll

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice DENVER -- Deborah Flora captured another straw poll win Saturday on the eve of primary ballots beginning to populate mail boxes across the district and the state. Following an exchange with 4th Congressional District opponent Richard Holtorf over the financial status of her non-profit and the service of family and spouses to active duty military, Flora captured the Republican Rumble straw poll victory here at the Grizzly Rose. Flora, viewed by some to be a front-runner with Lauren Boebert, earned 24.8% of the straw votes. "I'm humbled again for this latest straw poll victory. From Douglas to Weld and Kit Carson to Prowers, I've worked tirelessly to hear your concerns and be your voice for Congress," Flora said. "We're building on that momentu...

Evans positions as a ‘big tent’ option in 8th District during Rumble with opponent Janak Joshi

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice DENVER -- Gabe Evans appeared Saturday to walk the walk. "I'm going to work as a big-tent Republican," Evans said. "That is how we win the 8th Congressional District." When his opponent, Janak Joshi, drifted hard right during the Republican Rumble here at the Grizzly Rose, Evans seemed to moderate on issues that will play to a general election audience against an incumbent Democrat. "I'm literally all in to go out, fight and win, to flip this seat," Evans said, closing a debate with Joshi where he drew a major difference in intelligence policy and the abortion issue. Joshi supports dissolving the nation's intelligence community, and then rebuilding. It was supported from a Libertarian Party contingent in attendance. "All of these dep...
