Colorado Nonprofit Steps In As Immigrants Exit Aurora Detention Facility

By Jennifer Brown | Colorado Sun Casa de Paz gives people a warm meal, a suitcase, a phone charger and a way home, no matter how far that may be. Sitting on a couch in a one-story house near the immigration detention center in Aurora on a recent rainy weekday, J.R.V. began to retether himself to the life he was ripped from nearly five months ago. At his feet, tan work boots were in a plastic bag with his name written in Sharpie. He had last worn them on a Saturday morning in December when a sheriff’s deputy arrested him as he was driving to a construction site in Florida. They were a reminder of how quickly life changed. J.R.V., 40, spent about three days at the county jail followed by 12 at Alligator Alcatraz, the infamous, new immigrant detention center in the Florida Everglades,...

Stomping out stage 4 brain cancer: A Colorado story of grapes, grace and glioblastoma

By Drake Hunter | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice Sometimes the greatest miracle isn’t healing—it’s a night off. For families walking the road of stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer, even a few hours of rest can feel like a return to life. The weight is constant. The uncertainty is relentless. And caregiving, while sacred, can quietly drain every ounce of strength a person has. Recently, my wife Sherrie and I experienced something we hadn’t felt in a long time—margin. Breathing room. A moment to simply be human again. And it came through a story that could only be described as providential. Where the story began What makes this story remarkable is how it started—not through a formal organization or a well-funded campaign, but through a simple blog. When I began writ...

Serving Together — Mature Language of Love

By Pastor Drake Hunter | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. ~ Galatians 5:13 ~ If love is who we are, what does it look like when we put that love to work? Interesting question. There is a special kind of strength that emerges when God’s people connect, bond, and pray... they serve together, which is the language of love. It’s a strength that the world cannot produce or imitate. This strength of unity is created—not by power, preference, or personality—but by love in action. Service occurs when freedom intersects with humility, and grace aligns with responsibility and accountability to the greater good. Service is the...

Evergreen Pantry Gets Nearly 2,000 Pounds of Aid Delivered by Deputies

By Anna Coon | KDVR EVERGREEN, Colo. (KDVR) — A local food pantry in Evergreen received a major donation Saturday after deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office delivered nearly 2,000 pounds of food and supplies, much of it carried on their backs. Deputies trekked three miles through Evergreen carrying 50-pound packs filled with food and toiletries as part of a charity ruck, starting at Evergreen High School and ending at Evergreen Christian Outreach. “We train for this stuff, right?” Deputy Sheriff Drake Acosta said. “We make sure we’re all physically fit and ready to go for anything that comes our way. So just another Saturday afternoon for us.” The event is an annual holiday tradition for the Jefferson County Special Operations Response Team. In pa...

Denver Food Pantry Scrambles After Sudden Eviction Disrupts Aid to Thousands

By Anna Coon | KDVR FOX31 DENVER (KDVR) — A Denver nonprofit that provides groceries to about 5,000 families a month said it was forced to close its doors after it was kicked out of its warehouse space. Joy’s Kitchen, a food pantry that has operated in the Denver metro area for more than a decade, is now running pop-up food pantries in Lakewood, but organizers said they are desperate for a new permanent home. On Sunday, volunteers worked to pack up the group’s supplies, including thousands of pounds of food, so they could temporarily set up in the gymnasium at The River Church in Lakewood. The Sunday before Thanksgiving is typically one of the busiest days of the year for Executive Director Kathleen Stanley. Holiday weeks bring extra demand to the pantry, which she said usually...

A Miracle in Our Midst: Celebrating Pastor John Water’s Successful Liver Transplant

By Drake Hunter | Commentary, RMV NE CO Newsroom, Rocky Mountain Voice Every now and then, a moment arrives that stops us in our tracks and reminds us of the sheer goodness and mercy woven into the fabric of life. This is one of those moments. Just two days ago, our Lead Pastor at Elevating Life Church in Fort Morgan, CO, Pastor John Waters, received a donor liver and came through surgery with flying colors. Today, as I write this, he is recovering beautifully — awake, talking, smiling, and already cracking jokes. In classic John fashion, he’s showing us what unwavering faith looks like in real time. As Senior Pastor at Elevating Life Church, I’ve had the honor of walking closely with John throughout this journey — through the uncertainty, the long wait, and the quiet strength he ...

Small Colorado Town Turns Tragedy Into Triumph After Fire

By Russell Haythorn | Denver7 GoFundMe nears $200K as Nederland comes together in wake of Caribou Village Shopping Center fire. NEDERLAND, Colo. — It’s been a tough week for the small mountain town of Nederland, but amid the ashes, hope is taking root. The Caribou Village Shopping Center fire has destroyed more than 30% of the town’s businesses, but now, neighbors, local businesses, and volunteers are coming together to help turn heartbreak into action. Nederland is the kind of place where neighbors feel more like family, said Dan Vollmer, a local realtor with Berkshire Hathaway who launched a GoFundMe campaign for the town. “I’ve been up here a handful of years," Vollmer said. "You really start to call this place home after about two." As the fir...

Evergreen students return to school surrounded by community support

By Sage Kelley | The Denver Gazette Evergreen High School students returned to campus on Thursday morning, two weeks after a shooting shocked the small town. Parents stood on the sideline, holding signs of support. More than 100 posters from Colorado cities, spanning from Telluride to Steamboat Springs, lined the school’s halls, sharing condolences and words of encouragement. “It was difficult, for sure,” Tyler Guyton, a senior and one of two student body presidents, said. “For the past week, people have been trying to ignore it, but it’s hard to ignore it when you’re back in the school and see the posters on the wall, the new tiles and all that stuff.” The staff had returned to the school Monday. Thursday and Friday are “gradual” days for the students, with classes onl...
