New polling finds Biden’s approval rate slumping, disapproval rate growing

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice The State of the Union Address may not have had the result for President Joe Biden that he would have hoped. Emerson polling finds that his job approval rating has continued to slide since the address, and his job disapproval rating has continued to rise. Biden addressed the nation March 8. Polling was conducted April 2-3 of 1,438 registered voters with a margin of error of 2.5%. In January, voters surveyed by Emerson graded the President's approval at 42%, up from a low of 38% in November. That approval of 42% ticked down 1% in March and another 1% in April, Emerson finds. Disapproval of the President's job performance was at its lowest in January, coming in at 46% in Emerson polling. It has ticked up every month since, with 47% disap...

Barr says he’ll vote for person to ‘do least harm’, the ‘Republican ticket’ in November

By TARA SUTER  | The Hill Former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr said Wednesday he will vote for the “Republican ticket” in the November presidential election. “I think it’s my duty to pick the person I think would do the least harm to the country,” Barr said on Fox News’s  America’s Newsroom. “And in my mind, that’s — I will vote the Republican ticket.” Barr’s comments come in spite of past criticism of his ex-boss, former President Trump, who is the presumptive Republican nominee for president. In December, Barr said his successor in a potential second Trump administration would have to be against the former president’s “abuse of government power.” “Trump needs people around him who will push back and help keep him on the straight and narrow,” Barr said. Andrews, Webb qualify for ballot in crowded 3rd District primary field for Boebert’s seat in Congress

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice The dance card is filling up in the 3rd District's primary election to select the Western Slope's Republican nominee to potentially become the next representative in Congress. Russ Andrews and Lew Webb were added to the list of hopefuls to receive the party's nomination to the general election on Wednesday, when the Secretary of State's office announced their qualifications to the ballot. The seat is presently held by Rep. Lauren Boebert, who relocated to Windsor in the 4th District and is vying for the Republican nomination in that primary. It is the only Republican field larger than the 3rd District. Boebert had an opportunity to run for the Republican nomination in the 4th District's special election to replace ex-Rep. Ken Buck, but sa...

Colorado congressional candidates report contributions, cash in bank ahead of crowded primaries

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics As he has every quarter this election cycle, Democrat Adam Frisch bowled over Colorado's other congressional candidates in the campaign finance department in reports filed this week covering the first three months of the year. And that's even after losing U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert as an opponent — and lightning rod for donations — when the two-term Republican moved across the state to run in a safer district. Frisch, who nearly unseated Boebert in 2022 in the Republican-leaning 3rd Congressional District, hauled in $1.4 million in contributions for the quarter ending March 31, becoming the state's only federal candidate to break seven figures — for the fifth reporting period in a row. Do only four frontrunners remain in 4th District race? It appeared that way in Kit Carson County.

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice BURLINGTON -- A handful of candidates vying to become Eastern Colorado's next representative to Congress didn't make one of the state's bright, bright red counties a destination here Friday for the Kit Carson County Republican Party's Lincoln Dinner. The county situated on the Kansas border has delivered decisive, state-leading vote-count margins for Republican candidates for President, most recently giving Donald Trump 80% of the vote in both 2016 and 2020, supporting Mitt Romney with 75% support and John McCain with 66% respectively in 2012 and 2008, and George W. Bush with 72% support in his first run and 77% in his bid for re-election. In his final election, Rep. Ken Buck earned 85% of all votes from the county. In Burlington on Frida...

News organizations urge Biden and Trump to commit to presidential debates during the 2024 campaign

By David Bauder | The Washington Times Twelve news organizations on Sunday urged presumptive presidential nominees Joe Biden and Donald Trump to agree to debates, saying they were a “rich tradition” that have been part of every general election campaign since 1976. While Trump, who did not participate in debates for the Republican nomination, has indicated a willingness to take on his 2020 rival, the Democratic president has not committed to debating him again. Although invitations have not been formally issued, the news organizations said it was not too early for each campaign to say publicly that it will participate in the three presidential and one vice presidential forums set by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates. ‘We must win the special election,’ Lopez tells Kit Carson Republicans, while supporting primary slate

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice BURLINGTON -- Greg Lopez is embracing the role some have called a placeholder. "You have some great Republican candidates looking to be your Congressman," Lopez told Kit Carson Republicans gathered here Friday. "This special election is just about who will finish [ex-Rep.] Ken Buck's term." Lopez is hoping to be selected to do just that in Colorado's 4th District. He must first defeat Democrat Trisha Calvarese and Libertarian Hannah Goodman. In Colorado's most red-leaning district, it does not figure to be a tall order for a Republican to be awarded the seat, even if just for six months. "Apparently, my [Democratic] opponent is facing a challenge they don't qualify," Lopez said. "Now, this challenge is coming from their own party." ...

Sen. Bob Gardner fails to qualify for ballot, he announces in letter to supporters

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice State Sen. Bob Gardner has not qualified to appear on the Republican Party's 5th District primary ballot for Congress, ending his campaign. He announced in an email Saturday morning that signatures needed for a successful petition onto the ballot were not in excess of the 1,500 threshold needed, after the Secretary of State's review. "Just as we were preparing for an upcoming debate this week, we received the letter from the Secretary of State notifying us that we would not be on the ballot," Gardner wrote to supporters. "As disappointed as I am, I am not discouraged. From the day we announced, we have been gratified and encouraged by the support and contributions of so many good people who believe in our platform and our message of stan...

Ballot measure in Colorado would bar ‘placeholders’ from immediately seeking office

By Marianne Goodland | The Gazette A state legislator in Colorado is pushing a resolution to go to the ballot  that would bar an individual who is appointed to a legislative seat via the vacancy process from running for that position in the next election.     Assuming the measure gets on the ballot and voters approve it, the effect would be to prohibit somebody who secures the vacancy appointment after a vote of party insiders from seeking that legislative seat for the next term, effectively making that person a "placeholder."      State Rep. Bob Marshall, D-Highlands Ranch said his resolution would tackle the perception of a small group of insiders picking policymakers that decide major issues for the entire state.  READ THE FU...

Sonnenberg qualifies for Republican Party’s primary ballot in 4th District race

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice Jerry Sonnenberg, who served 16 years in the Colorado legislature and most recently as a county commissioner, has qualified for the Republican Party primary ballot in the crowded 4th District field for Congress. The Secretary of State’s office on Friday verified the Logan County Republican had enough verified signatures to qualify for the ballot. Sonnenberg submitted 3,155 signatures on his petition, with 1,719 being accepted. The Secretary of State’s office rejected 1,436 of the signatures submitted, or 45.5%. Sonnenberg was required to meet a threshhold of 1,500 accepted signatures. A record of all accepted and rejected signatures, including reasons for each rejection, is on file with the Secretary of State. Sonnenberg, who often ...
