Early cash surge in Colorado’s 8th congressional district as Democrats target Rep. Gabe Evans’ seat

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics Democratic congressional candidate Manny Rutinel has raised more than $1 million since launching his bid in late January to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans in Colorado's swingy 8th Congressional District, his campaign said. In just six weeks, Rutinel entered seven-figure territory with the help of more than 23,000 individual contributors, for an average contribution of less than $35, according to the Commerce City state lawmaker's campaign. More than 99% of contributions were under $100, a campaign spokeswoman added. Evans, an Army veteran and retired police officer, is serving his first term representing the Northern Front Range district after defeating Democratic incumbent Yadira Caraveo by fewer than 2,500 votes in last year's...

Congressman Gabe Evans introduces BELOS Act to support military families

By Tori Ganahl | Rocky Mountain Voice In a move to honor America’s fallen service members and their families, Colorado Congressman Gabe Evans has introduced the Benefits that Endure for Lifetimes of Service (BELOS) Act, a bipartisan bill that would provide free lifetime National Park passes to families of veterans who passed away due to service-related illness or injury. The bill is named in honor of First Sergeant Marc Belo, a decorated U.S. Army soldier who dedicated 30 years of his life to serving his country.  Belo was a first responder at the Pentagon on 9/11 and deployed three times—to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kosovo. He passed away in 2024 due to cancer linked to his military service. Rep. Evans, a fellow veteran who served alongside Belo, emphasized the signif...

Here’s the facts Rep. Gabe Evans used in hearing that Mayor Mike Johnston disputes

By Brian Porter | Rocky Mountain Voice When confronted Wednesday with crime data by U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans, R-Fort Lupton, detailing Denver's trends, Mayor Mike Johnston said the former Arvada police lieutenant was confused. "I think you may have some bad facts, and I'm happy to clarify them for you," said Johnston, one of four large-city mayors questioned by the U.S. House's Oversight and Government Reform Committee. In other words, despite his career in policing, Johnston either believes Evans is lying or can't understand crime data. Evans retorted, "I'm happy to show all of the sources for my facts." https://twitter.com/repgabeevans/status/1897406777114681422 And his office did in an email to the media. Following is a glance at those claims by Evans: A report by...

Sanctuary mayors broke laws, engaged in ‘an act of treason’ and should be prosecuted, some Republicans say

'We don't ask anyone's status at the time of arrest' — Denver Mayor Mike Johnston By Brian Porter | Rocky Mountain Voice At least one member of Congress is referring criminal prosecution of Denver Mayor Mike Johnston to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, on grounds he violated his oath and U.S. law, and another alleges him to be a traitor to the country. Those were but two of the allegations the mayor faced during a marathon hearing Wednesday on Capitol Hill in the U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee pertaining to sanctuary cities. He was joined on a panel by the mayors of Boston, Chicago and New York City. "I've heard you say Denver's crime went down, well Aurora's crime went up," said U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Windsor, Colo., who visited the city this summer ...

‘Who’s that who sat next to Gabe Evans at Trump’s speech?’ It was the mother of a Northern Colorado fentanyl victim

By Brian Porter | Rocky Mountain Voice If you tuned in to President Donald J. Trump's Address to the Nation on Tuesday, March 4, during a joint session of Congress, you might have gotten a glimpse of a number of lawmakers. One could be U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans, the representative from Colorado's 8th District. And seated next to him, you ask? That was Liz Hardy, who in the early hours of Jan. 1, 2022, tragically lost her middle daughter, Brooke. She consumed half of a counterfeit pill laced with a lethal amount of fentanyl. Brooke attempted to call 911 but could not give an address or reason for her call, and soon died. “One time, half a pill, and life for our family changed forever," Liz Hardy said. "If it were not for our faith in Christ, knowing we will see Brooke again one day, ...

Reps. Boebert, Evans to faceoff with Denver Mayor Mike Johnston in hearing today

By Brian Porter | Rocky Mountain Voice The national spotlight will shine brightly on Denver and Mayor Mike Johnston's sanctuary city policies during the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform today. He's among American mayors who will appear in front of the Committee. Across the dias will be Committee member U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert and Committee waiver U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans, two Coloradans who have had a front row seat to the rise in fentanyl deaths, crime, gang influence and more they likely will attribute to having been caused by sanctuary policies. "We are going to highlight how these sanctuary city and state policies fail public safety, make America less safe, and why we need to continue the path forward to build safe communities that we all deserve,” Evans...

Rep. Evans, the grandson of immigrants, joins U.S. House’s Hispanic Conference

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans, the grandson of Mexican immigrants, has joined the U.S. House's Congressional Hispanic Conference, his office announced Wednesday. The first-term congressman represents Colorado's 8th District, including most of Adams and Weld Counties. “I'm proud to celebrate the values and contributions of Hispanic Americans and their stories — like my Abuelito Chavez who earned his citizenship fighting for our country in World War II," Evans said in a statement for the announcement by the conference's chairman Tony Gonzales. "I look forward to working with my colleagues to lower inflation, strengthen public safety and make the American Dream more attainable." Evans spent 12 years in the U.S Army, rising to the rank of captain, and ...

Rep. Evans will join House Oversight Committee questioning Denver mayor on sanctuary policies

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice When Mike Johnston arrives in March to offer his testimony to the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the Denver mayor might recognize a member of the panel questioning him. U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans, a Weld County resident, has been authorized, presumably by Chairman James Comer, to waive onto the committee to question Johnston, and potentially the mayors of Boston, Chicago and New York City. Rep. Comer, in his capacity as chairman of the committee, announced Wednesday that Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and New York City Mayor Eric Adams would join Johnston on the March 5 panel investigating the policies of sanctuary cities and their impact on public safety and federal immigration enforcement. He has...

Letter asks Gov. Polis to lead repeal of three laws he signed which created state immigration sanctuary

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Whether Gov. Jared Polis means what he says is the subject of a recent joint letter from three Republican members of the U.S. House to the governor. The letter dated Jan. 17, 2025, references the governor's pledge in his State of the State address to "welcome more federal help to detain and deport dangerous criminals". The statement stands in opposition to three pieces of legislation law enforcement often say tells a different story. The letter, authored on U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans letterhead, and additionally signed by U.S. Reps. Lauren Boebert and Jeff Crank, takes the governor's comments at face value. "This is undoubtedly welcome news to Coloradans, who have watched the sanctuary state policies you signed negatively impact our state — f...

Rep. Gabe Evans appointed to bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus in first month in Congress

By Jesse Paul | The Colorado Sun U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans was named Wednesday to the congressional Problem Solvers Caucus, an appointment that means he will be part of key bipartisan policy negotiations and which blocks a prominent Colorado Democrat from campaigning against him in two years.  The Greeley Republican, who was sworn into office last week after unseating Democrat Yadira Caraveo in November, is one of four new members of Congress — two of them from Colorado — appointed to the caucus.  About 60 representatives are part of the invitation-only caucus, which was formed in 2017 and meets weekly to try to bridge partisan divides. The caucus has played a big role in negotiations on major policy initiatives in recent years on health care, COVID-19 relief and congressiona...
